WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University softball team went 1-1 against Butler on Saturday in a BIG EAST series doubleheader at Nats Youth Academy. The Hoyas won, 6-2, in game one and then fell to the Bulldogs in game two, 7-6, in extra innings. With the split record, Georgetown stands at 12-28 with a 4-6 mark in the BIG EAST, while the Bulldogs hold a 13-22 record and a 3-5 conference record.
In game one, junior Mallory Belknap (Scottsdale, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) led the Hoyas offensively with three hits, including a home run, and three RBIs. Senior Theresa Kane (Mystic, Conn./Stonington), junior Noelle Holiday (Bear, Del./Red Lion Christian Academy) and freshman Savannah Jones (San Rafael, Calif./Terra Linda) each had two hits. Georgetown tallied 11 hits against Butler.
Sophomore Anna Brooks Pacha (Houston, Texas/St. John’s School) pitched a complete game against the Bulldogs, giving up only six hits, two runs, walking one batter and striking out 12.
The Blue & Gray took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Belknap singled to right field scoring Kane for the first run of the game. Shortly after, junior Sarah Bennett (Owings, Md./Northern) singled to right field, advancing Belknap to score. In the bottom of the fourth, freshman Reagan Jones (Wyckoff, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) tallied the third run for GU off of a sacrifice hit by Kane, making the score 3-1.
With the Bulldogs cutting Georgetown’s lead to just one, Belknap hit a two-RBI homer to left field in the bottom of the sixth, giving the Hoyas a 5-2 lead. GU scored the final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth off of a single to center field from Holiday. Holiday collected an RBI off of the hit, sending freshman Macy Cartwright (Naples, Fla./Naples) to score the final run of the game to seal the 6-2 victory.
In game two against the Bulldogs, Kane, Bennett and freshman London Diller (Abilene, Texas/George Ranch) led Georgetown at the plate with two hits apiece. Bennett, Holiday and Diller each hit a home run, recording Diller’s first career homer. The Hoyas had nine hits against Butler.
In the circle, Diller went 8.0 innings, pitching a complete game. The freshman gave up 11 hits and seven runs while walking one and striking out four.
GU started off strong, scoring three runs in the bottom of the second. Sophomore Sera Stevens (Birmingham, Mich./Marian) singled to center field and brought in a run. Diller came up after and hit a two-run home run, giving the Blue & Gray a 3-0 lead.
In the fourth inning, Bennett homered to left center, her seventh of the season, making the score 4-1. The Bulldogs tied the game in the top of the sixth but GU responded in the bottom of the inning with a home run from Holiday, her sixth of the season. Butler scored two runs in the top of the seventh, giving them a 6-5 lead but Georgetown tied the game in the bottom of the seventh with a walk with bases loaded, forcing the two teams to go into extra innings.
Butler hit a game-winning home run in the top of the eighth inning, making the final score 7-6. The Blue & Gray will conclude the three-game BIG EAST series against Butler on Sunday at 11 a.m. Live stats will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
