WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University softball team (17-26, 2-9 BIG EAST) took the series but failed to complete the sweep in the final game against St. John’s (15-27, 3-8 BIG EAST) at Red Storm field in Queens, N.Y. The Hoyas gave up two runs in the bottom of the seventh to lose 2-1.Megan Hyson (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) led off in the first with a double to left center. Taylor Koenig (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) hit the sacrifice fly to get Hyson to third before Shikara Lowe (Beaverton, Ohio/Jesuit) slammed a single up the middle to bring in Hyson for the 1-0 Georgetown lead. Hyson threw three hits in four innings for the Hoyas before Mackensey Carter (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) came in to pitch in the fifth. Five different Hoyas had one hit in the third game of the series. In addition to Hyson and Lowe, Cara Savarese (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) and Madeleine Giaquinto (Falls Church, Va./Bishop O’Connell) went one-for-three while Hannah Slovacek (Austin, Texas/Westlake) went one-for-two. St. John’s out-hit Georgetown 10-5. The Red Storm began its seventh inning comeback with a double to lead off the inning. After stealing third on a throwing error, the St. John’s runner rounded third to make it a 1-1 game. After two more singles and a wild pitch, St. John’s had the bases loaded with one out. The Red Storm scored the go-ahead run on a single to left. The Georgetown University softball team will return to action at Towson on Thursday at 4 p.m. for a rescheduled game from March 27.
