WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University softball team (18-26, 2-9 BIG EAST) took a 3-1 victory over the Towson Tigers (20-23) on Thursday afternoon in Towson, Md. Cara Savarese (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) went three-for-four, hitting the double bring in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning.
Towson took the early 1-0 lead in the second after Brianna Jones hit a double to lead off the inning. Jones came around to score on a double from Delanie Dunham.
The Tigers retained the 1-0 lead until the fifth inning. Alexandria Anttila (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community) was hit by a pitch to reach first with one out. Megan Hyson (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) put two on base for Georgetown after Towson failed to complete the throw from third to first. With Anttila and Hyson on, Taylor Koenig (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) hit a line drive to the short stop with another Towson error bringing Anttila home for the 1-1 tie.
The Blue & Gray scored two runs in the eighth to take the 3-1 lead. Shikara Lowe (Beaverton, Ore./Jesuit) was walked to lead off the inning. Savarese slammed a double to left center to bring Lowe around the bases to score the go-ahead run. Hannah Slovacek (Austin, Texas/Westlake) hit a single for the RBI on the run from Savarese.
Mackensey Carter (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) sealed the win on the mound for Georgetown in eight innings with six strikeouts and no walked batters.
The Georgetown softball team returns to BIG EAST play this weekend with a three-game series against Providence (14-28, 5-8 BIG EAST) beginning at noon on Saturday at Guy Mason Field. Seniors Mackensey Carter and Cara Savarese will be honored before opening pitch of the first game on Sunday for their four-year contributions to Georgetown softball.
