FARMVILLE, Va. - Kristi Preuss drove in three late runs, including her third home run of the season, but it was not enough as the Georgetown University softball team (16-26, 5-9 BIG EAST) fell to Longwood, 6-4 on Sunday afternoon.
Melissa Conners (Wellington, Fla./Wellington) took the loss, allowing six runs on 10 hits, while striking out four through 6.0 innings.
Georgetown struck first, as Peters led the game off with a double and scored on Demetria Cipriano's (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs Charter) single to left field to take a 1-0 lead.
Longwood would answer in the bottom of the first, leading with consecutive hits, scoring their first run of the game before their first out. Gail Ketsdever later doubled to drive in a run and later score herself to put the Lancers in front 3-1. Longwood would add a run each in the second and third innings to open the lead to 5-1.
Preuss led off the top of the fifth inning with a solo home run to cut the lead to three runs. The Lancers got the run back in the bottom of the fifth inning to regain a four run, 6-2 lead.
The Hoyas would try to mount a comeback in the top of the sixth inning, putting two runners in scoring position, who would score on Preuss's single to centerfield. That would be the last offense GU would manage, as they fell by a final of 6-4.
Georgetown will return to play on Wednesday, when they host BIG EAST Conference foe Rutgers at Guy Mason Field. The teams will play two games with the first beginning at 3 p.m.
