WASHINGTON - A late solo homerun by Seton Hall's Sara Haefeli broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the seventh inning, handing Georgetown (21-32, 10-12 BIG EAST) a 2-1 loss in the final game of the regular season.
Prior to the homerun by Haefeli, sophomore Megan Hyson (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) was in control in the circle, allowing only one run on five hits. She finished the afternoon allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out seven in the loss.
Seton Hall got on the board in the top of the first inning and held Georgetown scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when the Hoyas tied up the game at one.
Junior Elyse Graziano (Floral Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) reached first on a fielder's choice groundout to third before stealing second base. Fellow Floral Park native and freshman Samantha Giovanniello (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) singled in the next at-bat to move Graziano over to third.
After Georgetown loaded the bases with one out, senior Shikara Lowe (Beaverton, Ore./Jesuit) stepped up and hit a deep sacrifice fly to right field, bringing home Graziano to even the score.
Georgetown was kept out of scoring position in the sixth and seventh innings, ending the game down by one run.
Georgetown's win over Seton Hall on Saturday afternoon gave them a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament in Tampa, Fla. for the first time in program history. The Hoyas will play their fist game of the tournament on Thursday, May 9, with the time and opponent still to-be-determined. Seton Hall's win on Sunday also allowed them to clinch a spot in the postseason tournament. Tournament matchups will be announced once the seeding is finalized.
