Softball Announces Spring 2018 Schedule

Jan. 16, 2018

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University softball team released its 2018 spring schedule. The squad will face eight teams which qualified in the 2017 NCAA Tournament, including three teams which finished 2017 ranked in the top 25 nationally. The Hoyas will also be challenged in the BIG EAST Conference schedule, tallying their 10th season competing in the conference.

GU will start off 2018 with four-consecutive tournaments, including one hosted by the Hoyas. The stretch begins with a tournament hosted by Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, Florida. The Hoyas will play five games over the three-day tournament that runs from February 9-11, including games against Memphis, NC State, FGCU, Ball State and Long Island University.

The season continues with a trip to the University of South Carolina, February 16-18, for four games against Michigan State, Mercer, Southern Illinois and South Carolina. The Gamecocks are ranked No. 25 in the nation and reached the NCAA Tournament last season along with Southern Illinois.

The Blue & Gray will remain in South Carolina when it competes in a three-day tournament at Coastal Carolina University from February 23-25. Georgetown will play a pair of games against Pittsburgh and Coastal Carolina, as well as a matchup versus Saint Joseph’s.

March will open up with the District Classic, hosted by the Hoyas at Nationals Youth Academy from March 2-4. GU will see Lafayette, Columbia, Howard and UMBC, as well as host Virginia and Iona. The Hoyas will see action from teams in other leagues, such as the Patriot League and the Ivy League. This is the second time that Georgetown will host the District Classic, but the first time it hosts alone. During the 2016 season, the Blue & Gray co-hosted with George Washington.

The Blue & Gray will then hit the road again for a night game at Arizona State on March 7, which is ranked No. 23 nationally and competed in the NCAA Tournament last season. Georgetown will compete in the Grand Canyon University Invitational from March 9-11 in Phoenix, seeing a pair of games against Grand Canyon and Iowa, along with a single game against Minnesota, which is ranked 15th in the country and made it to the 2017 NCAA Tournament.

The Hoyas will stay on the road, traveling to the College of Charleston March 16-18 for their final tournament of the season. In Charleston, GU will play a pair of games against Jacksonville State and matchups against Eastern Illinois and Texas. Jacksonville State and Texas both appeared in the 2017 NCAA Tournament.

BIG EAST play kicks off with an away series at Providence College on March 24-25. Georgetown returns home on March 28 against Kent State, which qualified for the 2017 NCAA Tournament. The Hoyas will then host BIG EAST contender St. John’s on March 29-30 at Nats Academy. St. John’s was the 2017 BIG EAST Regular Season champions.

The Blue & Gray will be on the road for the next five games, but not too far on April 4 when it travels to George Washington. On April 7-8 GU will face 2017 BIG EAST champion DePaul and then on April 11, the Hoyas will play at local rival George Mason.

Georgetown will welcome Butler on April 14-15 in BIG EAST play at Nats Academy and will compete against Towson in its last non-conference game of the season on April 17. The Hoyas will hit the road again for two more conference games against Villanova, April 21-22, and Creighton, April 28-29.

The Hoyas close out the regular season at home for a series against Seton Hall in BIG EAST play on May 5-6.

This year's BIG EAST Championship will be played from May 10-12 in Chicago, Illinois. The Hoyas look to return to the championships for the first time since 2013.
