Feb. 8, 2013
WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University softball team started their 2013 season this afternoon at the FIU Tournament in Miami, Fla., playing their first of four games in the 3-day tournament against North Carolina State. Lauren O'Leary (La Canada,Calif/LaCanada) pitched a complete game and catcher Shikara Lowe (Beaverton, Ore./Jesuit) went 2 for 3 with an RBI as the Hoyas fell to the Wolfpack 5-1.
Georgetown did not waste any time scoring, knocking in their one run in the first inning. Junior Alexandria Anttila (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community) reached second base after a one-out double to left field and team co-captain Lowe followed up with a single up the middle to give the Hoyas an early 1-0 lead.
NC State did all of their damage with the long ball, hitting four homeruns on the day. Renada Davis tied the game up at 1 in the top of the third with a solo shot to left-center field. Lana Van Dyken added another solo homerun in the fifth inning to put the Wolfpack on top 2-1. Georgetown kept it a one-run game until the sixth inning, where NC State added two more homeruns to give them the 5-1 lead.
Junior's Taylor Koenig (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) and Sophia Garqicevich-Almeida (Riverside, Calif./Martin Luther King) each added hits for Georgetown. O'Leary made her first start of the season, striking out three batters and giving up only three hits in addition to the four homerun balls.
The Hoyas are coming off a 19-32 season in 2012, the seventh under head coach Pat Conlan. The team has appointed two new captains and added six new freshman in what hopes to be an exciting season in the BIG EAST conference.
Georgetown continues tournament action this evening when they play Florida International at 6:30 p.m. Additional games will also be played on Saturday and Sunday.
