WASHINGTON – Junior Lauren O’Leary (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) of the Georgetown softball team was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll in the first week of nominations on Mon., Feb. 10. The news came via a BIG EAST press release which can be found here.
O’Leary started in two games for the Hoyas at the Florida Gulf Coast/Four Points By Sheraton Invitational this past weekend in Ft. Myers, Fla. The junior, who went 1-1, started the Blue & Gray’s season-opener and threw a complete game in the win while only giving up two earned runs as she struck out seven. She only walked one across her seven innings of pitching on Fri., Feb 7 against the Liberty Lady Flames. The win marked Georgetown’s third season-opener victory in nine years and the second time (2012, 2014) they defeated Liberty in the first game of the season.
O’Leary also only allowed one earned run and one walk to go with three strikeouts in Georgetown’s 2-1 loss to SEC opponent Ole Miss in her second start of the season on Sat., Feb. 8.
The junior currently owns a 1.62 earned run average across 13.0 innings to start the season. In addition, she has struck out 10 of her total 59 batters faced while only walking two.
Georgetown went 2-3 down in Ft. Myers, Fla. this past weekend with a 4-3 season-opening, comeback win over the Liberty Lady Flames. The Hoyas then dropped to close games to Florida Gulf Coast on Friday night, 2-0, and on Saturday morning to Ole Miss, 2-1. With back-to-back games on Saturday, Georgetown dropped its second game of the day to Western Kentucky, 6-0. The Blue & Gray played Ole Miss again in a 3-4 seed matchup on Sunday afternoon and won, 9-2, to close out their stay in Florida.
Georgetown next plays in a two-day weekend tournament on Sat., Feb 15 and Sun., Feb 16 in Farmville, Va. Bucknell, Longwood and Saint Joseph’s will be Georgetown’s three opponents. The first game will be against Bucknell at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.
