WASHINGTON – Georgetown softball’s Megan Hyson (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll on Monday for her play in the Hoyas’ only two games on Saturday at the Hofstra Invitational.
The junior has been named to the BIG EAST Softball Honor Roll three times this season; February 24, March 10 and today, March 17. Hyson was also named the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week on March 3.
Hyson went 3-for-6 at the plate at the weather-shortened Hofstra Invitational which cancelled games on Friday and Sunday. All three of the junior’s hits went for extra-bases (two doubles and one home run). She also scored twice and tallied one run batted in on her solo home run, which was her second on the season.
In the circle, Hyson (6-6) started against Columbia and threw a shutout, three-hit effort. In the complete game, seven-inning affair, the junior recorded 12 strikeouts as she moved her pitching record back to .500 and helped the team move back within three games of a .500 overall record at the conclusion of tournament play.
Hyson’s 12 strikeouts on Saturday against Columbia fell one short of her career high of 13 set on April 2, 2012 in an 8-0 shutout victory over UMBC. It was her fifth time in her three years of collegiate softball where she posted double-digit strikeouts.
Hyson, who owns a current five-game hitting streak, is leading Georgetown in batting average (.387), on-base percentage (.479) and slugging percentage (.629). She also leads the squad with 10 extra-base hits and 15 runs batted in.
As a pitcher, she has been dominate on the season with a 1.86 earned run average across 75.1 innings. Her WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched) is just a hair over one at 1.06. The junior is limiting her opponents to a .187 batting average. She also threw a no-hitter against Stony Brook earlier in the season.
The Georgetown softball team’s game on Tues., March 18 at Guy Mason Field against Colgate, a non-conference opponent, was cancelled due to the accumulated snowfall. It was scheduled to be the Hoyas’ first home game after inclement weather cancelled a March 4 matchup against Towson.
The Hoyas open BIG EAST play when they travel to Pennsylvania to take on Villanova University in a three-game series this upcoming weekend. Georgetown will play two games against the Wildcats on Sat., March 22 and one afternoon game on Sun., March 23. The first game on Saturday is set for noon with the second game following immediately after. Sunday’s affair is scheduled for noon.
