WASHINGTON – The Georgetown softball team (12-12, 3-0 BIG EAST) travel to Omaha, Neb. this weekend for the first three-game series against Creighton University (19-10, 2-0 BIG EAST) in a BIG EAST matchup. The Hoyas will play a doubleheader against the Bluejays on Sat., March 29 followed by a single game on Sun., March 30. The doubleheader on Saturday will start at 1 p.m. ET; Sunday's matchup is scheduled for noon ET.
Last weekend, Georgetown swept the Villanova Wildcats in the opening of BIG EAST play. The Hoyas outscored the Wildcats 21-5 in the three-game series. The matchup this weekend will be the first between Georgetown and Creighton as the two softball programs have never met before.
Georgetown junior Megan Hyson (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) leads the squad in batting average (.380), on-base percentage (.476) and slugging percentage (.648). Her .476 batting average and eight doubles are each tied for first offensively in the BIG EAST. The junior has been both dominate at the plate and in the circle. With a win against Villanova, Hyson increased her record to 7-6 with 85.1 innings thrown on the season. She has accumulated 83 strikeouts in those inning including two double-digit strikeout performances on the season. The junior has registered at least four strikeouts in 12 of her 13 starts this season. Hyson owns a 1.89 earned run average and is limiting her opponents to a .186 batting average.
Junior starting pitcher Lauren O'Leary (5-6, La Canada, Calif./La Canada) has only allowed one earned run over her last 16 innings in the past three games. The junior lowered her earned run average to 3.09 with nine solid innings thrown against Villanova.
Senior Alexandria Anttila (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community) is sitting with a .300 batting average going into the three games against Creighton. The junior is tied with a team-leading three home runs and 12 walks.
Senior Elyse Graziano (Floral Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy), who was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll this past Monday, went 7-for-11 against Villanova and continued to play a solid centerfield defensively. The senior raised her batting average 61 points over the three games to .280, which is third on the team. Her 17 runs scored ranks first on the squad and fourth overall in the conference.
Hyson, Graziano and sophomore Samantha Giovanniello (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) are tied for a team-best five multi-hit games. Hyson brings an eight-game hitting streak into the weekend.
Sophomore Grace Appelbe (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) has reached base in her last 11 games and owns a .382 on-base percentage.
With 18 runs batted in on the season, senior Hannah Slovacek (Austin, Texas/Westlake) sits one RBI shy of the team lead. The senior has five multi-RBI games on the season, which ranks first on the team.
As a team, Georgetown has registered 19 extra-base hits in its last seven games, going 5-2 over that span which includes a loss to now No. 1 ranked UCLA. The Hoyas have garnered five BIG EAST Honor Rolls this season and one Pitcher of the Week award. O’Leary and Graziano have each been named to the Honor Roll once. Hyson earned the Pitcher of the Week award and the three other Honor Roll selections.
Creighton comes into the weekend on a 10-game winning streak. The Bluejays have only allowed five runs over the 10 game span which includes six shutouts. Junior Lis Dike leads Creighton with 10 home runs, 27 runs batted in and a .667 slugging percentage. Her 10 home runs and 27 RBIs lead the BIG EAST.
Both of Creighton’s primary starters in the circle own a sub-two earned run average. With an 11-5 record, senior Becca Changstrom has compiled 114.2 innings with 146 strikeouts and a 1.40 earned run average; she leads the BIG EAST in all three of those categories.
