WASHINGTON – The Georgetown softball team (15-12, 6-0 BIG EAST) will plays its home-opener on Tues., April 1 when the squad hosts the Cornell Big Red (7-12, 0-2 IVY) in a doubleheader at Guy Mason Field in Washington, D.C. Play is set to begin at 4 p.m. with the second game following immediately after.
The Hoyas come into the matchup having won their previous eight games including two consecutive sweeps to start BIG EAST play against Villanova and Creighton, both of whom Georgetown played on the road.
This past weekend, the Hoyas outscored the Creighton Bluejays 17-6 in a three-game sweep in Omaha, Neb. The Blue & Gray hit six home runs on the Midwest trip including the first collegiate home runs for freshman Gabriela Elvina (Edison, N.J./Bishop George Ahr) and sophomore Grace Appelbe (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep).
The two Georgetown starting pitchers, juniors Megan Hyson (9-6, Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) and Lauren O'Leary (6-6, La Canada, Calif./La Canada), have not lost a game since the final game of the UCLA/CSUN Invitational against top-ranked UCLA on Sun., March 9. Hyson and O’Leary have each earned four wins since the beginning of the eight-game winning streak.
Hyson, who was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week today, owns a 1.90 earned run average in her 15 starts which include 14 complete games and four shutouts. Through 99.1 innings on the season, Hyson has totaled 106 strikeouts to 37 walks. The junior has reached double-digit strikeout totals in four of her last five starts. She is currently limiting her opponents to a .189 batting average. Hyson has earned five BIG EAST awards this season (one Player of the Week, one Pitcher of the Week and three Honor Roll selections).
O’Leary lowered her earned run average to 2.99 with three wins against Villanova and Creighton over the past two weekends. The junior has thrown 70.1 innings on the season including nine complete game performances.
Hyson also leads the squad in most offensive statistics through the team’s first 27 games including batting average (.400), on-base percentage (.489), slugging percentage (.675), doubles (8), home runs (4) and runs batted in (21). The junior is also tied with a team-high 13 walks.
Senior Elyse Graziano (Floral Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) comes into Tuesday’s doubleheader with a .291 batting average and a team-high 11 steals in 13 attempts. She is tied with Hyson for a team-best 13 walks. The primary leadoff hitter has reached bases 38 times in her 100 plate appearances for a .380 on-base percentage, which is good for third on the team.
Senior Alexandria Anttila (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community) is reaching base at a .395 rate, which ranks second on the squad. The senior owns the third-highest slugging percentage (.463) behind Hyson and freshman Alessandra Gargicevich-Almeida (.481, Riverside, Calif./Martin Luther King). Anttila and A. Gargicevich-Almeida both have three home runs on the season.
Senior Hannah Slovacek (Austin, Texas/Westlake) ranks second on the team with six doubles and 19 runs batted in. The senior is one of four players to appear in every game for the Hoyas this season.
Sophomore Samantha Giovanniello (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) hit her first career grand slam in the seventh inning of the 6-3 Saturday victory over the Bluejays. The sophomore is also one of six Hoyas with a .300+ on-base percentage on the season.
The Big Red (7-12, 0-2 IVY) have had its last four games cancelled due to inclement weather. Cornell was scheduled to play doubleheaders against conference opponent Harvard University on Sun., March 30 and Mount St. Mary’s today, Mon., March 31.
The Big Red come into the Tuesday matchup at Guy Mason Field with six players who hold a .300+ on-base percentage with at least 12 starts. Senior Christine Villalon, sophomore Meg Parker and freshman Jessica Biqbie each have a team-high 14 hits on the season. Villalon leads Cornell in batting average (.341), on-base percentage (.438) and slugging percentage (.512).
Cornell has three pitchers with at least six starts in 2014. Senior Alyson Onyon owns a sub-three ERA at 2.86 across 41.2 innings in the circle.
This will be the first ever meeting between the Georgetown Hoyas and the Cornell Big Red.
