WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University softball squad (12-29, 4-7 BIG EAST) will host Towson and Virginia on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively, for a pair of midweek games. First pitch for both games is set for 6 p.m. at Nationals Youth Academy. Live stats will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
The Hoyas went 1-3 last week, falling to George Mason in a midweek game and lost the BIG EAST three-game series against Butler over the weekend. GU defeated Butler in game one of Saturday’s doubleheader, 6-2. In the victory over the Bulldogs, sophomore Anna Brooks Pacha (Houston, Texas/St. John’s School) pitched a complete game, giving up only six hits, two runs, waking one batter and striking out 12. Junior Mallory Belknap (Scottsdale, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) led the squad offensively in game one with three hits, including a two-run homer.
For the season, senior Theresa Kane (Mystic, Conn./Stonington) leads the Blue & Gray offensively with a .321 batting average and a team high of 24 runs and 13 stolen bases, which ranks fifth in the league. Freshman Savannah Jones (San Rafael, Calif./Terra Linda) has a team high of 12 doubles, tied for third in the BIG EAST. Junior Sarah Bennett (Owings, Md./Northern) leads GU with seven home runs, tied for fourth in the BIG EAST, and has collected 24 RBIs along with sophomore Noelle Holiday (Bear, Del./Red Lion Christian Academy). Pacha is ranked second in the BIG EAST in strikeouts (119).
Towson holds a 32-11 record and has won nine of its last 11 games. The Tigers swept Elon over the weekend, going 3-0 in a CAA series, holding the Phoenix to no more than three runs in each game. Kendyl Scott leads the Tigers offensively with a .471 batting average, good enough for seventh nationally, and 19 doubles, tied for second in the NCAA, as well as three triples and five home runs. Brook Miko is tied for fourth in the country with 17 doubles and is second in the nation with 58 RBIs.
Virginia is currently 12-31 and went 0-4 last week. The Cavaliers fell 4-1 to Longwood for a midweek game and then were swept by Virginia Tech in an ACC series matchup. Allison Davis leads UVA at the plate, batting .371 with nine doubles, nine homers and 35 RBIs.
Following this week’s pair of midweek games, the Blue & Gray will hit the road to take on Villanova in a three-game BIG EAST series. Georgetown will take the field on Saturday for a noon doubleheader and then conclude the series on Sunday for a single game, also set for noon. Live stats will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
