Butler at Georgetown | noon ET | Live Stats
WASHINGTON – The Georgetown softball team (19-18, 7-5 BIG EAST) hosts the Butler Bulldogs (17-23, 5-6 BIG EAST) in a three-game, BIG EAST series this Friday and Saturday. The two squads will play a doubleheader on Friday, April 18 starting at 1 p.m. ET followed by a single game on Saturday, April 19 at noon ET. All games will be played at Guy Mason Field in Washington, D.C.
The Hoyas are two games shy of tying the program’s record of 21 wins, which was achieved in both 2008 and 2013.
Georgetown dropped a tough conference road series to the DePaul Blue Demons last weekend for the team’s first three-game losing streak since early March. DePaul held up to its BIG EAST reputation, where the Blue Demons maintain the only undefeated conference record, as they swept the Hoyas while limiting them to 10 hits across three games.
As a team, the Hoyas bring the third highest on-base percentage (.337) of the conference into the weekend matchup against the Bulldogs. In addition to 231 hits through 37 games, GU ranks second in the BIG EAST with 127 walks.
Junior Megan Hyson (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) leads the Hoyas with a slash line of .398/.488/.676 (average/on-base percentage/slugging percentage). The junior also has a team-best 17 extra-base hits, six home runs and 26 RBI. Hyson has reached base safely in her last 21 games.
While starting all 37 games in centerfield for the Blue & Gray, senior Elyse Graziano (Floral Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) owns a .297 average with a team-high 24 runs and 13 stolen bases, which also ranks third in the BIG EAST. In Georgetown’s 12 BIG EAST games, Graziano is batting .425 with 17 hits, seven walks and 10 runs scored. The senior is hitting even better at Guy Mason field with seven hits in her 16 at bats.
Sophomore Samantha Giovanniello (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) and senior Alexandria Anttila (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community) are both batting .333 in the squad’s five home games. Giovanniello owns the third highest RBI total (19) behind Hyson (26) and senior Hannah Slovacek (21, Austin, Texas/Westlake).
Anttila is reaching base in 40 percent of her plate appearances on the year, the second highest rate on the team.
In the circle, Hyson (10-9) possesses a 2.59 earned run average across 127.0 innings with 147 strikeouts, breaking down to 1.2 K/IP and 8.1 K/7. Hyson has four shutouts on the season to go along with 15 complete games in 19 starts.
Fellow junior Lauren O'Leary (9-9, La Canada, Calif./La Canada) has a 3.75 ERA in 110.0 innings. She is walking just 1.8 batters per seven innings in her 22 appearances, which includes 18 starts.
Butler went 1-2 last weekend at Villanova, picking up a win in the second game of their Saturday doubleheader.
The Bulldogs have won nine of their last 13 games dating back to their doubleheader with Northern Kentucky on March 26. Butler has outscored opponents 79-47 during that stretch, including five games with at least nine runs scored.
Butler has three players with a batting average above .300 with Cassie Rupel leading the way with a .364 average in 43 at bats. Sarah Gronowski owns the highest batting average (.313) for players with at least 100 at bats on the year. Alex Kotter rounds out the list with a .305 average. Kotter posted eight hits, eight RBI, five doubles, five runs and a .471 batting average in five games last week. She currently leads the BIG EAST will 11 doubles on the year.
Kristin Gutierrez has made 22 starts in the circle for Butler with a 2.82 ERA in 134.0 innings. She is limiting her opponents to a .244 bating average.
The Bulldogs bring the highest BIG EAST fielding percentage (.971) into the three-game series.
