Georgetown at Providence | noon ET | Live Stats
WASHINGTON – The Georgetown softball team (22-20, 8-7 BIG EAST) travels to Providence, R.I., this weekend to take on the Providence Friars (5-24, 3-11 BIG EAST) in a three-game, BIG EAST series. The two squads will play a doubleheader on Saturday, April 26 followed by a single game on Sunday, April 27. Games start at noon ET on both days.
The Hoyas won two midweek matchups this past week, moving the squad two games above .500. With at least two wins this weekend, Georgetown will clinch a .500 regular-season record for the first time in program history.
Georgetown defeated fellow D.C. foe George Washington on Tuesday by the final of 5-4. Tied at 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth, the Hoyas scored the go-ahead run against the Colonials on an RBI single by junior Sophia Gargicevich-Almeida (Riverside, Calif./Martin Luther King). The Hoyas continued the offensive trend by belting out 11 hits from eight different players in a 10-1 run-rule victory over the Towson Tigers two days later.
Junior Megan Hyson (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) got the Hoyas started with a three-run homer, her seventh of the season, in the game against Towson. Sophomore Grace Appelbe (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) tallied her first triple of her career, scoring two on the play. Senior Alexandria Anttila (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community) went 2-for-3 in the 10-1 win with two RBI.
In the circle, Hyson (13-11) limited the Tigers to one hit on Thursday across five innings as she stuck out seven of her first nine batters faced. She ended the game with nine strikeouts to only one walk. She has limited her walks to one per game over her last four games.
S. Gargicevich-Almeida went 3-for-6 in the two midweek games with two runs scored, two RBI and a double.
Senior Elyse Graziano (Floral Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) is hitting .440 (third in BIG EAST) in the squad’s 15 BIG EAST matchups with a .541 on-base percentage (third in BIG EAST). In that time, Graziano has recorded 22 hits (first in BIG EAST), 11 runs (fifth in BIG EAST), 11 walks (second in BIG EAST), six stolen bases (second in BIG EAST) and six RBI.
GU is hitting .260 against its BIG EAST opponents this season, up from its .242 average against non-conference schools.
Georgetown played Providence on the road last season. The Friars took the three-game series, 2-1. Providence also leads the all-time series, 6-4, dating back to the first matchup in 2009.
Though the Friars have had a tough season as of yet, the host squad comes into the weekend having won two of its last four games. Providence grabbed a win against both Villanova and St. John’s.
Danielle Deraney leads the Friars with a .353 average and a .441 on-base percentage in her limited 51 at-bats. Kiarra Balbassari, who is one of five Friars to start every game this season, is hitting .323 with 31 hits in 29 games.
In the circle, Taylor Huntly (4-17) owns a 4.37 earned run average in 18 starts with 12 complete games and 59 strikeouts across 113.1 innings. She has only walked 17 batters on the season. Georgetown comes into the series atop the BIG EAST with 152 walks drawn, equating to 3.62 walks per game. GU walked five times against GW and drew three more against Towson. Hyson (25), Graziano (22) and Anttila (20) all have 20-plus walks on the year.
Live stats will be available on Providence’s athletic site, www.friars.com.
