WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University softball team will play its final non-conference game of the season on Tuesday night against the Colonials of George Washington University. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Guy Mason Field.
With four games left on the regular season schedule, the Hoyas remain in the fifth place slot in the BIG EAST with a 9-10 conference record. The team returns from Louisville, Ky. where they went 1-2 against the No. 8 ranked Cardinal, picking up a 4-2 win in the middle game of the series behind a complete game performance from pitcher Lauren O'Leary (La Canada, Calif./La Canada).
Georgetown is 5-5 in their last 10 games and looks to earn a spot in the BIG EAST tournament for the first time in program history. Senior captain Shikara Lowe (Beaverton, Ore./Jesuit) has stepped up to lead the team through BIG EAST play, ranking first in all major offensive categories in 19 regular season BIG EAST games for the Hoyas. She is also the overall team leader with a .338 batting average, a .467 on-base percentage, and leads the team with 22 walks at the plate.
George Washington has been on their own hot streak, having won 14 of their past 15 games prior to their contest with Georgetown on Tuesday night. Victoria Valos leads the squad offensively with 11 homeruns and 47 RBI while batting a team-high .353. Amanda Zakeri is a threat on the base path, swiping 27 bases this season which ties her for first in the Atlantic 10 conference.
Georgetown won the most recent matchup between the two teams, a 1-0 shutout victory last season. Alexandria Anttila (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community) provided the only run of the ballgame with a double in the fifth inning while O'Leary picked up the win with five strikeouts.
