May 7, 2013

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University softball team will be departing today for their first ever appearance in the BIG EAST postseason softball tournament in Tampa, Fla.

The Hoyas (21-32, 10-12 BIG EAST) locked up the fifth seed in the tournament with a win on Saturday over Seton Hall and a loss by Providence to Syracuse on Sunday. They are scheduled to play fourth-seeded DePaul (31-20, 16-6 BIG EAST) in game one of the quarterfinals on Thursday, May 9 at 10 a.m. on USF's softball complex in Tampa, Fla.

Thursday's matchup between Georgetown and DePaul will mark the first meeting between the two teams this season. DePaul won all three games in last year's series at Guy Mason Field, outscoring Georgetown 16-1 over the course of three games. Since joining the conference in 2006, DePaul had made the BIG EAST tournament every year.

The Blue and Gray come into the matchup after winning one of three against Seton Hall over the weekend, a 5-0 shutout in game one led by the complete game, four-hit performance by sophomore Megan Hyson (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake).

Georgetown had three players hit over .300 this season and will count on key hitting in Thursday's game. Senior Shikara Lowe (Beaverton, Ore./Jesuit) lead all Hoyas with a .336 batting average in 50 games this season, while Junior Elyse Graziano (Floral Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) and freshman Samantha Giovanniello (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) started all 53 games this season, batting .333 and .302, respectively.

Junior Alexandria Anttila (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community) provided the power on offense this season, belting 12 homeruns and totaling 35 RBI, leading the team in both categories.

Hyson and sophomore Lauren O'Leary (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) did the bulk of the pitching, starting all 53 games and earning all 21 wins for Georgetown. The duo has combined for 335.2 innings pitched, 295 strikeouts and have each held opposing batters to an average under .300 this season.

Other notable season statistics include Graziano's 19 stolen bases this season which ranks fourth in the BIG EAST, Lowe's .460 on-base percentage which ranks seventh in the conference and Anttila's 11 homeruns, which ties her for fifth in the BIG EAST.

Players to watch for DePaul are Samantha Dodd who leads the team with a .374 batting average and Mary Connolly who leads DePaul in homeruns and RBI with 10 and 41, respectively. Kristen Verdun, who batted .370 this season at the plate has also been dominant on the mound. She tied for third in the BIG EAST with 22 wins and posted a 1.94 ERA over 227.1 innings pitched. All three players started all 51 games for DePaul on offense this season, with Verdun starting 34 games in the circle as well.
