The 27th Annual Athletic Recognition Event, hosted by The Annual Fund for Georgetown Athletics and Hoyas Unlimited, will be held on Friday, Sept. 27 at Leo J. O'Donovan Hall at Georgetown University, as the department celebrates the accomplishments of the 2012-13 academic year. The Athletic Recognition Event will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a cocktail reception followed by an awards ceremony, dinner and entertainment.
Several awards will be presented at the event, highlighted by the Robert A. Duffey Scholar-Athlete Award. This year's recipient is former men's soccer player Andy Riemer (C'12).
Riemer, who was selected sixth in the Major League Soccer Supplemental Draft by the Los Angeles Galaxy, played a key role in Georgetown's move onto the national stage over the past four years. He began his career as a forward and moved into the midfield his senior season. He scored 21 career goals, including nine during the 2012 season, and tallied eight assists for 50 points over 82 games played and 62 starts. The 2012 senior class, including Riemer, was the most successful class in program history. Their arrival sparked a turning point for the program as they have helped move the Hoyas into an elite class and took the team to the national championship game.
Through a national championship game appearance, a trip to the College Cup, two NCAA Tournament berths, a trip to the BIG EAST Championship game, two BIG EAST Regular Season Championships and a presence in the national rankings, where they ranked as high as No. 3 in 2012, they made their mark at Georgetown. Over four years, the seniors combined for a record of 50-23-11 overall and 24-12-1 in BIG EAST play.
Shikara Lowe (C'13), who helped lead the Georgetown softball team to its first-ever appearance in the BIG EAST Tournament, will be recognized with the Outstanding Achievement by a Female Athlete. Lowe, who led the Hoyas to a 21-23 overall record, including a 10-12 mark in the BIG EAST to reach the league tournament for the first time, was selected All-BIG EAST First Team. Lowe posted the best season of her four-year career to become Georgetown's first softball player to earn first team honors. The senior catcher batted .336 (with five home runs and 29 runs batted in over 50 games). She slugged .471 and posted a .460 on-base percentage, good for seventh in the league. Lowe was even stronger in conference play, batting .388 (26-for-67) with four home runs and 19 RBI against BIG EAST opponents.
Otto Porter Jr. (ex '15), the No. 3 pick in the 2013 National Basketball Association (NBA) Draft, will be presented with the Award for Outstanding Achievement by a Male Athlete. Porter Jr. had a spectacular sophomore season, capped off by being named the BIG EAST Player of the Year and a First Team All-American by the Associated Press. He was the first Georgetown player to be named a First Team All-American by the Associated Press since Allen Iverson during the 1995-96 season, became the fifth Hoya to earn first team honors and it was the eighth time a Georgetown player has been selected to the first team (Patrick Ewing did so three times, while Eric Floyd, Reggie Williams, Alonzo Mourning and Iverson were each named once).
A 6-8 forward, he also earned First Team All-America honors from the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), was named the National Player of the Year by Basketball Times and was a finalist for both the Naismith Trophy and for the Wooden Award, recognizing the top player in college basketball. Porter Jr. was named the BIG EAST Player of the Year and was the only unanimous selection to the All-BIG EAST Conference First Team. Porter Jr. led the Hoyas in scoring and rebounding with 16.2 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. Porter Jr. was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week three times during the 2012-13 season, including a streak of three-straight honors. It was the first time a BIG EAST player had won the award in three-straight weeks since the 2003 season.
Head Men's Soccer Coach Brian Wiese is the recipient of the Outstanding Coaching Achievement Award after leading the Hoyas to the national championship game last season. Wiese was also named the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/Field Turf Division I Coach of the Year. The Hoyas put together a historic season, finishing with a 19-4-3 record, and advancing to the national championship game where the team lost to Indiana, 1-0. Along the way, the 2012 team advanced further than any team in program history, won the BIG EAST Blue Division Regular Season, made it to the BIG EAST Tournament Championship and set a new record for wins in a season.
Georgetown Athletics will also recognize L. Edward (C'66) and Irene Shaw with the Outstanding Contribution to Athletics Award for their contributions to the men's and women's soccer programs.
The J. Gregory Carroll Award will be announced that evening.
