Three Hoyas Take Part in WSF Athlete Leadership Communications

Nov. 1, 2017

WASHINGTON - Last month, three Georgetown student-athletes traveled to New York City to take part in the Women’s Sports Foundation (WSF) Athlete Leadership Connection, held at Morgan Stanley's International Headquarters in New York City. Representing the Blue & Gray were seniors DiDi Burton (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore City College Prep) of women’s basketball and Jacquelyn Eleey (Quincy, Mass./The Taft School) from women’s golf as well as recent graduate Alessandra Gargicevich-Almeida (C’17) of the softball program. This full-day development conference brought together industry leaders, sports experts and champion athletes to address the specific issues that female athletes face while competing in their sport or in the transition from their competitive careers to their next professional opportunity. This invitation-only conference hosted Olympic and world champion athletes, as well as collegiate student-athletes. More than 30 Olympic and professional athletes were in attendance this year, as well as 45 senior student-athletes from 15 schools. In addition 50+ sports and business professionals were on hand to share their expertise. The day also featured breakout sessions that focused on interview skills and resume building, and attendees were then given the opportunity to interview with companies specifically tailored to their career goals. Tennis great Billie Jean King and highly-decorated U.S. Paralympian Bonnie St. John delivered keynote addresses. What they had to say… Burton “The Women's Sports Foundation event was truly a great experience. I met a lot of influential people that really want to help. The conference definitely made me feel more confident about the transition from college athletics to the real world. I had the opportunity to connect with LaChina Robinson, she gave me some really good advice and accepted my request to be my mentor. She's truly amazing. I had the opportunity to listen and receive advice from Billie Jean King and Bonnie St. John, who are phenomenal trailblazers in terms of making a difference in the world. That was really inspirational! All in all, the Women's Sports Foundation helped me acquire more strategies to win in the real world and made me feel more confident about navigating life after the buzzer.”

Eleey “The Athlete Leadership Connection was an incredible experience and I am honored to have been a part of it. I have never been around so many empowering, positive and strong women. Receiving advice from women who are the best of the best in their sport or job was unbelievably inspirational and it was a day I’ll never forget.”

Gargicevich-Almeida “The WSF Athlete Leadership Connection was an incredible experience. It brought together women who all share the passion of sport. The most inspiring part was having well-established females in sport giving back and mentoring the next generation of female leaders. Getting to sit no more than twenty feet away from Billie Jean King and listen to her empower young women, especially after everything she has done for women in sports, was an experience I will never forget. It was just as much educational as it was inspirational. Another one of my favorite parts was doing the mock interview. I had the opportunity to interview with Holly Lindvall, Vice President of Human Resources & Diversity for the New York. She was so approachable, encouraging, and gave great advice on how to pursue a career in sports. I don't think anyone, either mentor or mentee, left without feeling they could take on the world.”
