WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University softball team welcomes six new players to the team for the 2012-13 season in Mikaela Bledsoe-Downes (Phoenix, Ariz./Horizon Honors), Molly Morrison (Northfield, Ill./New Trier), Taylor Henry (Front Royal, Va./Skyline), Grace Appelbe (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep), Samantha Giovanniello (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial), and C.J. Semones (Bethany, Conn./Amity Regional).
All six newcomers are incoming freshmen. The class features two catchers and four infielders.
Head Coach Pat Conlan enters her eighth season at Georgetown, and her fifth season of BIG EAST play. The Hoyas will begin regular season play at the FIU Tournament in Miami, Fla. in February.
"I am excited about our freshman class. They are strong and athletic and fit our needs perfectly. They are tremendous people and have great energy. I am excited with the impact they are going to make in the classroom and on the field during their careers on the Hiltop."
Mikaela Bledsoe-Downes 4|Fr.|C/3B|Phoenix, Ariz./Horizon Honors Conlan on Bledsoe-Downes: "Mikaela will add depth on the corners and behind the plate. She figures prominently in our plans for the future." Bledsoe-Downes was a four-time varsity letter winner and captain for three years at Horizon Honors High School, where she was named 2A Central Region Player of the Year in 2011. Bledsoe-Downes played club softball for the Arizona Hotshots, where she was part of the team that finished second at the U-16 Western Regional Nationals. She made the principal's honor roll all four years of high school and is a member of the National Honor Society.
Molly Morrison 10|Fr.|C|Northfield, Ill./New Trier Conlan on Morrison: "Molly is a powerful athlete, who brings tremendous arm strength and depth to the catching position. She will have an opportunity to develop her game behind senior catcher, Shikara Lowe." Morrison was a three-time letter winner and senior captain at New Trier Township High School, winning conference and sectional championships each of her four years. Her team reached super sectionals in 2010 and made the Illinois State 4A Final Four in 2011. She played her club softball with the Illinois Chill. Morrison was named to the top 100 players and top 13 catchers in Ill. by the Chicago Sun-Times. She is an Illinois State Scholar, member of the Spanish National Honor Society, and made the honor roll all four years of high school.
Taylor Henry 17|Fr.|SS|Front Royal, Va./Skyline Conlan on Henry: "Taylor is an exciting player who will add depth to our infield. She has the potential for a bright future." Henry was a two-time captain and team MVP at Skyline High School, winning district championships her sophomore and senior years. She was named first team All-Region her senior year and first team All-District her junior and senior years, after making second team All-District as a freshman and sophomore. She also starred in basketball at Skyline, earning several honors and breaking the school scoring record. Henry graduated with distinguished honors and a 4.0 GPA.
Grace Appelbe 18|Fr.|SS/2B/OF|Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep Conlan on Appelbe: "Grace has all of the tools to blossom into a great collegiate player. Her tremendous versatility will make her a key player this year." Appelbe started every game at shortstop during her four years at Xavier Colege Prep, and was a team captain as a senior, leading her team to a region championship. She was a 2010 All-Region second team selection and two time honorable mention. Appelbe played club softball for the Arizona Storm and Arizona Hotshots. She received the 4-year Scholar Athlete Award, earned First Honors throughout high school, and is a member of the National Honor Society.
Samantha Giovanniello 23|Fr.|IF/P|Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial Conlan on Giovanniello: "Sam is a 5-tool athlete who will add depth to our infield and pitching staff. We expect her to be an immediate contributor to our success this year." Giovanniello was named 2009 New York State Player of the Year, helping Floral Park Memorial High School win the New York State Softball Championships. She is a two-time First Team All-State, First-Team All-Long Island, and First-Team All-Nassau County selection. She played club softball for Team Long Island Gold. Giovaniello is a member of the National Honor Society and earned high academic honors all four years.
C.J. Semones 31|Fr.|1B/OF|Bethany, Conn./Amity Regional Conlan on Semones: "Her energy and enthusiasm are contagious. She possesses all the intangibles a successful ball player should have." A captain in her senior year, Semones was a two-time CIAC Connecticut All-State and All-Housatonic Division selection. She was named CIAC Connecticut State Championship game MVP in 2012 after helping Amity Regional High School to an undefeated regular season. Semones earned second honors 10th-12th grade.
