Georgetown Swimming and Diving Hits the Water at the ECAC Championships This Weekend

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Georgetown swimming and diving travels to the University of Pittsburgh this weekend for the ECAC Championships.  Pitting the top swimmers and divers in the region, Georgetown is sending 19 athletes to compete in a number of events this year.

Michelle Herd (Canton Center, Conn./Westminster) and Juliana Bonilla (West Covina, Calif./Covina High) not only have the distinction of moving on the ECAC Championships but  also earned the right to compete in the BIG EAST Championship and NCAA Division I prequalification meet respectively.  Herd qualified for the BIG EAST Championship in the 100 and 200 Back while Bonilla dove well enough to earn a spot in the 1 meter, 3 meter and 10 meter platform diving events at the NCAA Division I prequalification meet in Buffalo, N.Y. March 14th and 15th.

Joining Herd and Bonilla at the ECAC Championships will be senior captains Bryan Evangelista (Northport, N.Y./St. Anthony’s) and Jim McLaughlin (Plantsville, Conn./Southington High) as well as senior Francesca DiSilvio (Hingham, Mass./Hingham High).  Evangelista qualifies in the 50 and 100 Free as well as the 100 Fly while McLaughlin will swim in the 200, 500 and 1650 Free.  DiSilvio will represent the Hoyas in the 50 and 100 Free as well as the 200 Back.

Colleen Newman (Staten Island, N.Y./Notre Dame), Katie Amaro (Shreveport, La.) and Corine Rhodes (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) round out the women’s side of Georgetown’s entries.  Newman will swim in the 1650 Free while Amaro will comete in the 100, 200 and 500 Free.  Rhodes will race in the 100 and 200 Breast as well as competing in the 200 IM.

On the men’s side, Mike Bayer (West Chester, Pa./Bishop Shanahan), Edmund Caulfield (Caldwell, N.J./St. Peter’s Prep), Mike Dowley (McLean, Va./Langley), Shodai Enters (Tokyo, Japan/St. Mary’s International), Steve Ferguson (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum), Brendan Griffin (Andover, Mass./St. John’s Prep), Jon Hayden (Woodbridge, Va./Osbourn Park), Kevin Rieffel (Ambler, Pa./La Salle College High), Heath Walden (Scituate, Mass./Boston College High), Kevin Walsh (Bethesda, Md./Saint Anselms) and Ted Lin (Columbus, Ohio/Columbus Academy) will make the trip to Pittsburgh.  Bayer races in the 50 Free and 100 Fly, Caulfield competes in the 200 and 500 Free, Dowley swims the 200 and 400 IM as well as the 200 Breast and Enters will join the 50, 100 and 200 Free events.

Ferguson will race in the 100 and 200 Back as well as competing in the 100 Fly while Griffin hits the water in the 400 IM and 500 and 1650 Free.  Hayden races in the 200 Fly, 500 and 1650 Free while Rieffel competes in the 500 and 1650 Free.  Walden will race in the 400 IM and 200 Fly as Walsh races in the 100 and 200 Fly.  Lin will attend the ECACs as a member of the 200 Free relay team.
