WASHINGTON – The Georgetown women’s tennis team (1-3) fell to the Navy (3-1) on Sunday afternoon in Annapolis, Md. at the Tose Family Tennis Center in the Brigade Sports Complex. Georgetown got up early after grabbing the doubles point, but could not come away with the win in singles play.
Georgetown faced Navy this past fall at the Navy Blue & Gold Invitational. In the four matches at the Invite between the two squads, Georgetown won the only doubles meeting, but lost three singles matches.
The freshman pair of Victoire Saperstein (Las Vegas, Nev./Odyssey Charter School) and Sophia Barnard (Mill Neck, N.Y./Portledge School) turned in the first win for the Hoyas on Sunday as they defeated a pair from Navy, 6-3. In the fall Invite, Barnard was also part of the doubles win against Navy.
Senior co-captains Kelly Comolli (Newburyport, Mass./Phillips Exeter Academy) and Madeline Jaeger (Laguna Beach, Calif./Laguna Beach) turned in the second doubles win for the Blue & Gray as they downed Navy’s Logan Antill and Katie Porter, 6-2. Dating back to fall, Comolli and Jaeger are now 4-4 as a doubles pair on the 2013-14 season and have a career mark of 12-6 as a pair.
Jaeger also earned one of the two singles victories for the Hoyas as she defeated Logan Antill in straight sets, 6-3; 6-3, in the fourth position.
Georgetown junior Sophie Panarese (Milton, Mass./Milton Academy) grabbed her first singles victory of the spring when she beat Noelle Kaufmann of Navy on the fifth court.
Georgetown fell on one win short of defeating Navy at home, which would have been a big accomplishment. The Navy women’s tennis team has won 18 straight home matches since their loss to George Washington on March 4, 2012.
The Georgetown women will travel up to Boston, Mass. for matches against Boston College and Boston University on Sat., Feb. 1 and Sun., Feb. 2, respectively.
