Maxi Thiels Clinches Victory, As Hoyas Defeat George Washington, 5-2

WASHINGTON, D.C. - WASHINGTON, D.C. - Freshman Maxi Thiels (Atlanta, Ga./The Lovett School) fought off a match point before defeating George Wasington's Verena Knoedler in the No. 4 singles match to clinch the Georgetown women's tennis team's 5-2 victory over the Colonials at the McDonough Tennis Complex. For the Hoyas it was the first win over the Colonials since 2005.
After dropping the team doubles point, freshman Alex Sebia (Plains, Pa./Scranton Prep) cruised to victory in the No. 6 singles match, defeating Michele Style, 6-1, 6-1.
Junior Courtney Olsen (Englewood, Colo./Colorado Academy) and senior Liz Winokur earned consecutive victories in the second and third singles spots to put Thiels in a position to clinch the match in the No. 4 spot. Thiels did not disappoint coming from behind in the final set for the personal and team victory.
Freshman Elizabeth Sullivan (Potomac, Md./National Cathedral School) was also able to outlast her opponent in a three-set match, defeating Madhuri Jha, 7-6(7), 5-7, 6-3 in the No. 5 singles match.
GU will return to action at the McDonough Tennis Complex on Friday when they take on BIG EAST Conference rival, Villanova at 1 p.m.
