Women's Tennis Defeats Villanova, 4-3, on Senior Day

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown women’s tennis team (10-10, 3-2 BIG EAST) defeated the Villanova Wildcats (4-15, 0-3 BIG EAST) in a close conference match on Wednesday afternoon, 4-3. The match was played on Georgetown’s campus at the McDonough Outdoor Tennis Complex.

The Hoyas dropped the doubles point, 2-1, but proved to be successful, winning four out of six singles matches.

Anchored by senior co-captains on senior day, Kelly Comolli (Newburyport, Mass./Phillips Exeter Academy)  and Madeline Jaeger (Laguna Beach, Calif./Laguna Beach) were honored before the match for their years of outstanding play and finished strong, accounting for three wins on Wednesday.

Comolli and Jaeger won the squad’s only doubles match on the day. The senior pairing improved to 5-8 on the duals season and 13-10 over the last two years.

Comolli played her singles match from the No. 2 position on Wednesday, earning her ninth victory with a win over Tori Smyth in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-0. The senior finished with a 9-11 singles mark.

Jaeger also improved to 9-11 with a victory over Villanova’s Samantha Shafer in straight sets, 7-6(5), 6-4.

GU freshman Sophia Barnard (Mill Neck, N.Y./Portledge School) won her No. 4 position match in straight sets against Kate Pettee of the Wildcats, 6-2, 6-0. Barnard was the third Hoya on the afternoon to improve to 9-11 for the season.

Georgetown sophomore Liselot Koenen (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) earned her 10th victory over Connor Brewer, 6-1, 6-1, from the No. 6 position. Koenen went 10-1 from the No. 6 spot this year.


 

 

The Blue & Gray will now gear up for the BIG EAST Tournament, which will be held in New York, N.Y. from Thursday, April 24 to Saturday, April 26.
