WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's tennis team added Kelly Comolli (Newburyport, Mass./Philips Exeter Academy) to their spring roster. The Cornell University transfer was played No. 1 doubles and No. 4 singles for the Big Red.
"We're thrilled to have Kelly join the team," said Georgetown Head Coach Gordie Ernst. "With her athleticism and doubles skills, she'll make an immediate impact."
Last year as a freshman at Cornell, she and her twin sister Shannon Comolli started the spring ranked eighth in doubles play in the ITA Regional Poll. The pair lost to the top-ranked team in the quarterfinals at the 2010 ITA Northeast Regional Championship to move into the regional rankings in the spring.
Comolli finished her first collegiate campaign with a singles victory over Dartmouth's Ryan Reichel, Binghamton's Yulia Smirnova, St. John's Diamond Adams, St. Bonaventure's Kathryn Kvas and Dumitrita Lepuras from Bucknell at No. 4.
The sister tandem posted two No. 1 doubles victories over players from Columbia University in league play as well as wins over Fairleigh Dickinson University, the New Jersey Institute of Technology, St. John's and St. Bonaventure. The pair won the A Doubles title at the Cornell Winter Invitational.
The Big Red was 9-11 overall and 1-6 in Ivy League play.
Comolli lettered twice at Phillips Exeter Academy, playing at No. 1 singles and at No. 1 doubles with her sister. The pair won the main doubles draw at the Summer Circuit ITA regional in 2010. In 2009, she moved into the top four in the New England under-18 rankings. Comolli also played for the New England Zonal Team, as well as Team New England. She lettered four times in basketball, serving as team captain twice, and lettered one time in field hockey. Comolli graduated as the third highest scorer in girls' basketball history at Phillips Exeter.
