Women's Tennis Opens Season at Virginia Commonwealth University
RICHMOND, VA. -- Hoya women's tennis opened the 2004 spring season with matches against Campbell University and Virginia Commonwealth University in the VCU 4+1 Invitational in Richmond, Virginia on Friday January 30.
In the first match of the day, Georgetown was defeated by Campbell 4-1. Sophomore Kristin Dew (Nashville, Tenn.) and freshman Sana Malouf (McLean, Va./ St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) won the #1 doubles match with a 6-2,7-6 victory over Pinto and Gore.
In the second match of the day, Georgetown was defeated 4-1 by Virginia Commonwealth, the #17 ranked team in country in the NCAA Division I rankings. Eileen Boyle (Burr Ridge, Ill./ St. Ignatius Prep (Chicago)) won her match at #4 singles, defeating Diana Campo. In doubles, the senior tandem of Jordan Botjer (Miami, Fla./ Ransom Everglades) and Lara Madonia (Ramsey, N.J./ Immaculate Heart Academy) started slowly, but had a tremendous second set performance against 2003 NCAA doubles semifinalist Urickova and her partner Ripert.
The Hoyas return to Richmond on Sunday, February 1 to play their final match in the VCU Invitational at 12 noon against East Carolina.
