Hoya Women Open Spring Campaign
The Hoya women opened the spring campaign of the 2000-2001 season with dual matches against local rivals George Mason University and the University of Maryland this past weekend. GU lost both matches, the first to George Mason on Friday, February 2nd 4-3 and then Sunday, February 4th 7-0 to Maryland.
The George Mason match began with the doubles competition where the winner of the two of the three doubles matches would gain a team point. The Hoya tandem of Caroline Marshall (Jr., Pittsford, N.Y./Harley) and Hadley Muckerman (So., St. Louis, Mo./MICDS) led the way with an 8-1 victory over GMU's Lulu Rodriguez and Dinali DeSilva at #2 doubles. The point for the doubles competition was then clinched by Lara Madonia (Fr., Ramsey, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) and Meredith Bumpass (So., Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Hawken School (Colgate)) as they defeated Dari Thayaprasat and Joanna McCandlish 8-4 at #3 doubles. The Hoyas then proceeded to sweep the doubles competition when Jordan Botjer (Fr., Miami, Fla./Ransom Everglades) and Julie Hom (Sr., Newton, Mass./Newton South) defeated Suzy Ihnat and Jessica Strickler 8-4 at #1 doubles.
The singles competition then began as #1 through #4 singles matches took the court with Georgetown holding a 1-0 lead in the team score. George Mason quickly made up the deficit as Madonia was defeated 6-2, 6-4 by Ihnat at #2 singles, Bumpass was defeated 7-6(4), 6-2 by Rodriguez at #4 singles and Muckerman was defeated 7-6(6), 7-6(2) at #3 singles. The Hoyas picked up their second team point as Marshall, in her debut match of the 2000-2001 season, won in three sets at #1 singles, defeating Strickler 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. The team score was then knotted at 3-all as senior Lindsey Manwell, also appearing in her first match of the year, defeated McCandlish 6-4, 6-1 at #6 singles. The decisive singles match in the team competition, matched GU senior Hom against Patriot freshman DeSilva. DeSilva prevailed 6-2, 6-4, giving George Mason the penultimate point.
The Hoya women turned right around and played their second match of the spring campaign of the 2000-2001 season against University of Maryland. The match was played at the Univ. of Maryland Tennis Bubble on the College Park, Md. campus. The final score was Georgetown-0, Maryland-7.
The match began with the doubles. Maryland quickly raced through the Hoya doubles tandems. Botjer and Hom lost to Delila Causevic and Pam Floro at #1 doubles 8-0. Madonia and Bumpass lost to Emily Marker and Danielle Piacente at #3 doubles 8-1. Marshall and Muckerman lost to Olivia Dubovikov and Chloe Chavardes 8-1. Maryland took the team point for the doubles competition to lead 1-0 as the singles competition began.
In singles, Georgetown faced stiff competition. Great matches were played at the #1, #2 and #5 singles positions. Marshall lost at #1, 6-1, 6-1, Botjer fell at #2 6-0, 6-4 and Bumpass was defeated 6-2, 6-1. In the other singles matches Hom played #6 and lost 6-2, 6-4, Madonia and Muckerman both lost 6-0, 6-0 at #3 and #4 respectively.
