Women's Tennis Blanks George Mason, 7-0
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Georgetown University Women’s Tennis team defeated George Mason 7-0 on Saturday, on the Hoyas’ home courts at the Army-Navy Country Club.
The match saw the Hoyas sweep the six singles events in convincing fashion. At first singles, sophomore Liora Gelblum (Cupertina, Calif. / Monta Vista) defeated Dinali DeSilva, 6-2, 6-1. Sophomore Liddy Bartell (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. / Torrey Pines) won her second singles match with Jennifer Dektas, 6-2, 6-0; while fellow sophomore Trina Snow (Sartell, Minn. / Sartell) emerged victorious at third singles over Katie Sloper, 6-1, 6-0. At fourth singles, junior Jordan Botjer (Miami, Fla. / Ransom Everglades) downed Kelly Melichar, 6-3, 6-0. Hoya Sophomore Monisha Ghia (Bethlehem, Pa.) beat the Patriot’s Suzan Tugberk at fifth singles, 6-1, 6-2; while junior Stephanie Sutton (Arlington, Texas / Sam Houston State) did not lose a game in her 6-0, 6-0 victory over Jill Collins at sixth singles.
Georgetown also swept the three doubles matches, earning the doubles point and ensuring the shutout. At first doubles, the sophomore duo of Bartell and Snow teamed up to defeat DeSilva and Dektas, 9-7, in the most competitive match of the day. Botjer and Ghia blanked their opponents at second doubles, 8-0; while at third doubles Sutton and Gelblum beat their counterparts, 8-4.
The win improved the Hoyas’ dual match record to 4-4. The Hoyas return to action on Friday, February 21, when BIG EAST rival Pittsburgh comes to town for a dual match. Action begins at 4 p.m. at the Montclair Country Club in Dumfries, Virginia.
