Georgetown Doubles Seals Victory In 5-4 Win Over George Washington

WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 9) - The Georgetown women's tennis team hosted local rival George Washington on April 9 at the McDonough Courts. The prevailing weather conditions were dreadful for spring tennis as temperatures were in the low 50's and wind gusts were up to 30 miles an hour. The Hoyas showed great resiliency in the face of GW's good play and the weather, and took a satisfying 5-4 win on the day. The victory gave the Hoyas their sixth straight win and pushed their dual match record over .500 for the first time in 1999-2000 at 10-9.

The match began with the singles competition. Georgetown found itself down early in the match as No. 6 Sarah White (Fr., Westwood, Mass./Milton) fell 6-4, 6-3. At No. 3, Caroline Marshall (So., Pittsford, N.Y./Harley) broke serve late in the first set and served to reach 5-5 but was broken and lost 6-4, 6-1. Down 2-0, the Hoyas got a point on the scoreboard when Lucky Ravindra (Sr., Lake City, Fla./Texas Tech) downed her GW opponent 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles. GW then extended its early lead to 3-1 as Hoya Lauren Mendes (Sr., Summit, N.J./Oak Knoll) was upset 5-7, 6-4, 6-1. Solid play from Georgetown allowed the Hoyas to knot the team score at 3-3. Missy Mendes (Sr., Summit, N.J./Oak Knoll) responded with a 6-0, 6-7(2), 6-2 win at No. 4 singles. Moments later, Sarada Ravindra (Sr., Lake City, Fla./Texas Tech) turned in her most important singles victory of the year as she thwarted GW 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 in the see-saw No. 2 singles match.

With the team score knotted at 3-3, it was time for the Hoya doubles tandems to go to work. S. Ravindra and M. Mendes continued their streak of solid doubles play by winning 8-2 at No. 2 doubles. GU's No. 3 team couldn't take advantage of their game point opportunities and Kim Wattrick (Fr., Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich./University Liggett) and Hadley Muckerman (Fr., St. Louis, Mo./MICDS) were dispatched 8-0. Ultimately, the decisive team point came at No. 1 doubles where L. Ravindra and Marshall finished their match with several solid return games, defeating GW 8-5. The Hoyas' doubles teams are now 17-1 in their last six matches.

GU's women's tennis team will go for their seventh straight victory on Tuesday, April 11, at home against Mount St. Mary's at 3:00 p.m.
