WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's tennis team will open BIG EAST Tournament play on Thursday in Tampa, Fla. The fifth-seeded Hoyas will battle the No. 12 Seton Hall University Pirates at noon, at the Varsity Courts.
Georgetown had an outstanding spring campaign finishing the season with a record of 15-5 overall and a mark of 5-2 in BIG EAST play with conference victories over Villanova, 7-0; No. 57 Syracuse, 5-2; Seton Hall, 6-1; Connecticut, 7-0; Pittsburgh, 6-1. It marked the second-consecutive season of success as Georgetown has now posted two of its best seasons in the past 10 years. The Hoyas finished off the year having won their last eight matches.
There were also individual accolades with junior Vicky Sekely (Mississaga, Ontario/Lorne Park Secondary School) earned BIG EAST Player of the Week honors and sophomore Tina Tehrani (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) being named the BG EAST Player of the Month in the fall.
Leading the way for the Blue & Gray are Tehrani, Sekely and senior Lauren Greco (Oakmont, Pa./Shady Side Academy). Tehrani is 22-6 overall with a mark of 13-5 at No. 2. Sekely is 22-7 overall and has five wins at both No. 3 and No. 4. Greco is 21-12 overall for the year and 12-7 at No. 1.
Sophomore Madeline Jaeger (Laguna Beach, Calif./Laguna Beach) has also done well with an overall record of 19-9 and a mark of 12-2 at No. 5.
Tehrani has won her last nine singles matches, while Jaeger has won her last five.
In doubles play, the pair of Tehrani and Sekely is 17-3 overall going 15-2 at No. 2, while the pair of sophomore Kelly Comolli (Newburyport, Mass./Philips Exeter Academy) and Greco is 10-9 at No. 1.
Georgetown defeated Seton Hall, 6-1, earlier in the season.
The winner of Thursday's match will advance to face No. 4 DePaul on Friday. The Blue Demons are currently ranked 69th in the nation and finished third in the BIG EAST Conference a season ago.
