WASHINGTON – The Georgetown women’s tennis squad will travel to Annapolis, Md. this Fri., Oct. 11 to partake in the Navy Blue & Gold Invitational, a three day tournament hosted by the United States Naval Academy.
Teams participating in the invitational include Towson, UMBC, Howard, James Madison, Longwood, Mary Washington, George Washington, Georgetown and the host, Navy.
The women will be playing at the Fluegel-Moore Tennis Stadium, an outdoor complex, and indoors at the Tose Family Tennis Center. All 12 courts at both complexes will be in action simultaneously with “A” doubles and “A&B” singles on the outdoor courts and “B” doubles and “C&D” singles on the indoor courts.
A consolation bracket will be held for any player who drops their match in the first round of the singles draw.
This season the Hoyas have faced UMBC and George Washington at their annually-hosted Georgetown Classic tournament. In the singles draw at the Classic, Georgetown went 4-1 against UMBC and 4-6 against George Washington.
Georgetown freshman Sophia Barnard reached the semifinals of the Georgetown Classic after winning four matches, two of which were over George Washington’s Stephanie Wie, 6-4, 6-2, and Taylor Nedelander, 6-4, 6-4, on her way to an eventual defeat by GW finalist Lana Robbins; 6-0, 6-4. GU senior co-captain Madeline Jaeger defeated UMBC’s Adriana Aldunate, 6-0, 6-0, and reached the quarterfinals after a forfeit by Julia Sauer of GW. Hoya junior Sophie Panarese won against GW’s Brydie O’Connor, 6-2, 6-4 and UMBC’s Isabel Aldunate, 3-6, 6-4, 10-3. Georgetown senior co-captain Kelly Comolli beat GW’s Grace Egger, 6-1, 6-1. GU sophomore Taylor Perz defeated UMBC’s Madlena Kurasz, 6-4, 6-1.
In the doubles competition at the Georgetown Classic, Panarese and Barnard defeated Egle Jakuciunaite and Brydie O’Connor of George Washington in the round of 16, 8-3. Senior co-captains Comolli and Jaeger defeated Julia Sauer and Adriana Aldunate of UMBC, 8-4, in the round of 16 as well before losing to Grace Egger and Lana Robins of GW, 8-7, 7-2, in the doubles quarterfinals.
Play at the Navy Blue & Gold Invitational in Annaplois, Md. will start at noon on Fri., Oct. 11. Action on Saturday and Sunday starts at 9 a.m.
