Women's Tennis Outstanding in Georgetown Invitational
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Hoya women's tennis squad continued its successful fall season with an outstanding overall team performance in the October 2-3 Georgetown Invitational held at the McDonough Outdoor Tennis Complex.
The Hoyas hosted the Invitational with some extremely tough competition led by American University -- 2004 Patriot League Team Champion and 2004 NCAA National Team Championship Qualifier, George Washington -- 2004 Atlantic 10 Conference Team Finalist, UMBC -- 2004 American East Conference Team Finalist and James Madison of the powerful Colonial Athletic Association conference.
Georgetown captured two of the three singles flights to punctuate a very successful weekend. Hoya senior Liora Gelblum (Cupertino, Calif./Monta Vista) won the Flight Singles A title and freshman Adriann Gin (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) won the Flight B Singles Titles.
Outstanding singles results were also turned in by Nora Gardner (Greenwich, Conn./Deerfield Academy (Mass.)), Sana Malouf (McLean, Va./St. Stephen's & St. Agnes School), Liddy Bartell (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Torrey Pines), Steph Cohen (Fayetteville, N.Y./DeWitt) and the corps that made reached the singles finals in the D.C. Metro Championship, Liz Winokur (West Palm Beach, Fla./Cardinal Newman), Maddie Long (Washington, D.C./Academy of the Holy Cross (Md.)) and Eileen Boyle (Burr Ridge, Ill./St. Ignatius Prep).
Doubles results also showed continued improvement from the Hoyas as all five teams won matches in the Invitational brackets, including Michelle DiCocco (Media, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) and partner Boyle against American.
The Hoyas will continue to challenge their capabilities this upcoming weekend as they compete at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y., site of the US Open Championships. The Hoyas will join 21 other teams in the 2nd Annual USTA National Tennis Center Women's College Tennis National Invitational. Teams that are expected to compete (and their Final 2004 National Rankings) include: #16 North Carolina, #16 Kentucky, #16 Texas A&M, #19 Tennessee, #33 South Carolina, #38 Harvard, #54 Penn, #59 Boston College, #63 Virginia, #68 Arkansas, #70 Yale, Penn State #11 East Region, No. Carolina State #12 Southeast Region, Princeton #14 East Region, Boston U #15 East Region plus Ivy League powers Brown, Dartmouth, Columbia, Cornell and 2004 Patriot League Conference Finalist Army and Rutgers of the BIG EAST.
