WASHINGTON - On a late night on the west coast, several Hoyas, current and former, competed at the USA Track & Field Championships and Junior Championships. Held at famed Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., one student-athlete advanced to the finals of her event in the junior championships while two former Hoyas ran in the men's and women's 5,000-meter run finals.
All-American Chelsea Cox (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) advances to the finals of the 800-meter run after she won her prelim heat with a time of 2:09.31, narrowly edging out Virginia's Vanessa Fabrizio with a time of 2:09.82. Also competing in the preliminary event was Shanique Dasilva (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Ford) who finished fourth in her heat (2:11.61), and missed the cutoff for the finals by less than one second.
In the junior men's 800-meter run, Billy Ledder (Washington, D.C./Gonzaga) competed in the prelims, running 1:52.82, enough for fifth place in his heat and 10th overall where the finals take the top eight.
Upon completing four record-setting years on the Hilltop, four-time All-American Chris Kinney (Stockbridge, Ga./Stockbridge) ran in the fourth of four heats in the men's 110-meter hurdle prelims. His time of 13.87 fell short of qualifying for the next round where only four collegians advanced of the 18 athletes.
During his time on the Hilltop, seven-time All-American Andrew Bumbalough set many records and accomplished such feats as a sub-four minute mile. Now running for Nike, Bumbalough is still more than impressive on the track as he took fourth in the men's 5,000-meter run. Staying back for the majority of his race, Bumbalough stayed with the lead group as the pack spread thin, making sure he was a part of the top five. As the lead pack continued to thin out more, Bumbalough was in a battle with Matt Tegenkamp, representing Oregon Track Club. With 800 meters left, the front pack pulled away as Bumbalough and Tegenkamp were left to run against each other. As Bumbalough kicked, Tegenkamp seemed as if he didn't have as much in the tank and Bumbalough took fourth handily with a time of 13:39.94.
Competing in the women's 5,000-meter race, former Hoya and four-time All-American Elizabeth Maloy finished 11th overall with a time of 15:38.74. Maloy now competes for New Balance.
Saturday's action will feature Max Darrah (South Yarmouth, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth Regional) in the junior men's 3,000-meter steeplechase slated for 9 p.m., ET, while Brian King (Sonoma, Calif./Cardinal Newman) will compete in the junior men's 5,000-meter finals at 11:30 p.m., ET.
Before those races, seven-time All-American Emily Infeld (University Heights, Ohio/Beaumont) will compete in the women's 1,500-meter finals as one of just two collegiate athletes alongside Oregon's Jordan Hasay on her home track. The finals are slated for 5:34 p.m., ET.
At 8 p.m., ET, Cox will compete in the junior women's 800-meter final running in lane three.
