Georgetown Volleyball Drops Season Opener to George Washington 3-1

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University volleyball team lost 3-1 in its season opener on Friday to George Washington in the DC Challenge at American University. Brooke Bachesta (Sammamish, Wash./Eastside Catholic) led the squad with 11 kills while Kortney Robinson (Pleasant Grove, Utah/Pleasant Grove) led the team with 22 digs in the Hoya effort and Ashley Malone (San Jose, Calif./St. Francis) recorded the ninth double-double of her career. Set scores were 21-25, 19-25, 25-23, 19-25. A nailbiter of a third set resulted in 14 tied scores and three lead changes, and Robinson's five kills and eight digs helped push the Hoyas to a win in the third set, 25-23. Tied at 22, Robinson recorded a kill to put GU ahead 23-22. After an attacking error and a kill from George Washington, Bachesta capitalized on an open opportunity to close out the set. Like the third, the fourth set also resulted in three lead changes. Trailing 10-9, Bachesta notched a kill on a set from Malone and GW had an attacking error to make the score 11-10. Malone tallied six of her 11 digs in the fourth set and recorded 35 assists throughout the match for her first double-double of the season. To open the match, Georgetown allowed George Washington to get the first three points and keep the lead throughout the match. With GW leading 11-5, the Hoyas scored five of seven to come within three at 13-10, but could not get any closer. George Washington closed out the set at 25-21 with a block from Leah Hill. Robinson and Malone led the team with five digs each in the set. The Hoyas opened the second set 3-0 and maintained a lead for over half the frame. Lindsay Wise (Raleigh, N.C./Raleigh Charter) had four kills to help the Hoyas reach a tie at 17 but could not close out the set. Georgetown lost the lead and fell 25-19.
The Hoyas return to action on Saturday against George Mason at 1 p.m. and American at 5 p.m. at the DC Challenge in Fairfax, Va. |
