Women's Volleyball Earns Runner-Up Honors at Black & Gold Challenge

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Georgetown University women's volleyball team (4-7) won its second match in a row with a 3-1 (30-28, 30-26, 25-30, 30-25) victory over South Dakota State at the Black & Gold Challenge held at Wake Forest University on Saturday, September 17 at Reynolds Gym. With the victory, the Hoyas finish second as the two-day tournament after falling to host Wake, but posting wins over Morehead State and South Dakota State.
Senior Rachel Nelson and junior Annie Connor were named to the All-Tournament Team. It was the second All-Tournament honor for Nelson as she was also tapped for the Georgetown Classic All-Tournament Team.
Nelson turned in a double-double on the night with 12 kills and 12 digs. The outside hitter also had three blocks in the four-game match. Connor donated 10 kills, five digs and four blocks to the winning effort. She also hit a solid .474.
Georgetown, led by a 19-kill, 16-dig performance by senior opposite side hitter Jenny Weed, hit .292 for the match, while the Jackrabbits recorded .255. The Hoyas took a one-block edge in team blocks (8-7). Kristina Martin led SDSU with a match-high 24 kills, while Minette Ridenour posted 15 digs and 12 kills.
Sophomore setter Kate Fisher had another terrific outing. She paced the Hoyas with a match-high 52 assists to go with nine digs, five kills and two blocks.
Georgetown returns home to McDonough Gym on Tuesday, September 20, when cross-town rival American pays a visit to the Hilltop. Match time is 7:00 p.m.
