Georgetown Volleyball Falls to Virginia in Straight Sets at Wildcat Classic
Sept. 20, 2008 EVANSTON, Ill. - Senior Caitlin Boland (Naperville, Ill./Benet Catholic) recorded a double-double with 30 assists and 11 digs, but the Georgetown University volleyball team (6-5) was not able to overcome Virginia, falling in three sets to conclude its weekend at the Wildcat Classic. Boland was later named to the Wildcat Classic All Tournament team for her play over the two day tournament. Junior Jessica Hardy (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa) led the GU hitters with 13 kills and freshman Tory Rezin (Morris, Ill./Morris) had 10 digs in the loss. The Hoyas took an early lead in the first set behind two kills from Hardy, but the Cavaliers stayed close, tying the score at nine. A Georgetown service error gave UVA the lead; one they would never relinquish, as they led by as many as eight on the way to a 25-17 first set win. The second set was almost a replica of the first as Georgetown and Virginia traded leads up to nine. The Cavaliers again took a 10-9 lead before running away with the set. Boland had 10 assists in the second set, helping set up five of Hardy's 13 kills. Georgetown would not let UVA run away with the third set. The two teams for the third set sat tied at nine with Virginia winning the next two points. This time the Hoyas had an answer, as a kill from junior Courtney Cohen (Tampa, Fla./Berkeley Prep) and an ace from freshman Sara Manley (Dove Canyon, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) tied the score at 12. Senior Kit Niesen's (Gainesville, Fla./Eastside) kill and two UVA errors gave the Hoyas a 16-13 lead, their largest of the match, but the Cavaliers evened the score at 17. GU fell behind by a point, but again rallied as junior Kiersten McKoy (Oakland, Calif./Bishop O'Dowd) had a kill and an ace to help the Hoyas regain a 21-19 lead. UVA would recover and the teams would trade leads from that point on with Virginia finally capturing a 27-25 win to clinch the match.
