WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University volleyball squad (11-7, 1-1) defeated Marquette University (7-7, 0-2) in five sets, 3-2. Samantha Trauth (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) notched 13 kills and 14 digs in the win. Vanessa Dorismond (Cary, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) also recorded 13 kills, with a .308 hitting percentage and two total blocks. This is the Hoyas first BIG EAST win of the season.
"We came out strong and executed at a high level," said Head Coach Arlisa Williams. "We floundered in games two and three from lack of execution but we found a way to fight back, which makes coaching this team so great."
During the deciding fifth set, play went back and forth early. Marquette was able to tie the score at three, but GU scored the next three points on two kills from Ashley Malone (San Jose, Calif./St. Francis) and an error by Marquette to put the Hoyas up 6-3. After a solid run by the Blue & Gray to go up 10-6, Marquette came within two at 11-9 but errant play by the Golden Eagles and two kills from Dorismond closed out the set at 15-11. The Hoyas hit .500 as a team in the fifth set.
The Hoyas fell behind 6-0 to start the fourth set before a kill from Lindsay Wise (Raleigh, N.C./Raleigh Charter), who had 12 kills and five total blocks in the match, put the Hoyas on the board. Down 16-11, GU scored seven of eight points to take the lead 18-17. Marquette fought off two set points before Kortney Robinson (Pleasant Grove, Utah/Pleasant Grove) connected for a kill to end the set 25-21. Robinson tallied five kills in the set and 13 in the match.
Georgetown fell behind early in the third set and could not recover, dropping the set 25-17. In the second set, GU went up 24-20 on a kill from Dorismond for set point. Marquette fought back and capitalized on two GU errors to take the set 26-24. Dorismond recorded three kills and two service aces in the second set.
In an exciting first set that featured 14 ties and seven lead changes, the Hoyas came out on top 25-22. Marquette came within one at 22-21 and 23-22 before GU closed out the set on two kills from Elizabeth Riggins (Mission Viejo, Calif./Santa Margarita). The Hoyas hit .414 at a team in the first set.
