TAMPA, Fla. - The Georgetown University volleyball team (6-14, 0-7 BIG EAST) lasted five sets before losing a thrilling match against the University of South Florida (12-9, 4-4) 15-25, 25-17, 13-25, 25-18, 10-15.
"It was an all-around team effort," said Georgetown Head Coach Arlisa Williams. "We played with a lot of heart. We just couldn't quite finish it."
The Hoyas played well defensively, led by MacKenzie Simpson's (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) 17 digs. Alex Johnson (Tampa, Fla./Plant) registered a double-double with 16 kills and 14 digs. Dani White (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) turned in 15 kills for the match.
The first set went to the athletic USF team, but GU would adjust and win the second set convincingly. "We played a really great game in the second, just good volleyball all around," said Williams. Georgetown hit .316 in the set with 18 kills.
USF dominated the third set, winning by 12 points. The resilient Hoyas bounced back to win the fourth, taking control with an early 7-2 lead. The score would later be tied at 12 before GU pulled away. Senior Lindsay Wise (Raleigh, N.C./Raleigh Charter) hit a perfect 5-for-5 and had 5 of her 10 kills.
"In the third we just couldn't quite sustain it, but bounced back in the fourth. It's great for us that we pushed for a fifth set. We came out strong and they kind of whittled away at us." Georgetown has lost the past 13 matches.
The Bulls' Erin Fairs had a double-double, recording 10 kills to go with a match-high 19 digs. Kayla Walton had 16 digs, and Ciara Brown hit .421. USF out-blocked the Hoyas 15 to 8.5, and hit and accurate .231 to GU's .143.
"We're working hard, our energy's good, and we're just ready to come home and regroup."
The Blue & Gray will return to McDonough Arena for their next four matches. Next weekend GU hosts conference opponents Notre Dame and Depaul Friday, Oct. 19 and Sunday, Oct. 21.
