Haley Lowrance had 24 assists against Notre Dame
Oct. 20, 2012
WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University volleyball team fell to 6-15 overall and 0-8 in BIG EAST play, as Notre Dame (14-6, 7-1) dominated the Hoyas in three sets 25-17, 25-12, and 25-13.
Sophomore middle blocker Dani White (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) had an outstanding match and was a bright spot for GU as they saw their losing streak extended to 14. White turned in a match-high 10 kills with a team-leading .471 hitting percentage.
16 different players saw time on the floor for the deep Notre Dame team. The Irish hitters were on fire, hitting at a .467 clip as a team while the Hoyas hit only .134. Toni Alugbue led a balanced attack with nine kills on 14 attempts. Maggie Brindock was successful on six of seven swings for a .857 percentage.
The Hoyas' best set was the first. However, the Irish maintained control throughout. It featured six ties and three lead changes early, all coming at 7-7 or before.
"We only earned six points in the second game and seven points in the third. When you only earn 13 points in two games you make it very difficult to win," said Head Coach Arlisa Williams.
Notre Dame played an efficient match, committing only five attack errors to GU's 15.
The Hoyas passed well on the night. Junior setter Haley Lowrance (Phoenix, Ariz./Sunnyslope) recorded 24 assists. "I thought that Haley did a nice job setting the hitter that was 1-on-1," said Williams.
"There are some really positive things, but unfortunately we didn't terminate those balls that were passed so well and set 1-on-1. We need to get kills there. If we're able to do that, I think it's a very different story."
Freshman outside hitter Lauren Saar (Plainwell, Mich./Plainwell) played well defensively in two sets in her first match back in the lineup since Sept. 15 against Presbyterian.
The Hoyas take the court at McDonough Arena this Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m., where they will meet BIG EAST foe DePaul.
