Oct. 29, 2010
WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University volleyball team (14-12, 4-6 BIG EAST) defeated Rutgers (9-14, 1-8 BE) in five sets, 25-21, 25-19, 24-26, 23-25, 15-13. Ashley Malone (San Jose, Calif./St. Francis) recorded six hits in seven attempts, with 38 assists and 15 digs. Vanessa Dorismond (Cary, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) notched her first double-double of the season with 13 kills and 11 total blocks. Tory Rezin (Morris, Ill./Morris) contributed 25 digs in a strong defensive effort.
"It got crazy at times, but we did what we needed to and played a total team game," said Head Coach Arlisa Williams.
The fifth set began with Georgetown taking six of seven to go up 6-1. After some back-and-forth play, Malone connected for a kill to put the Hoyas up 13-7. Rutgers notched four straight kills and a service ace before Elizabeth Riggins (Mission Viejo, Calif./Santa Margarita) notched a kill from Malone to put GU up 14-12. Another Rutgers kill brought the Scarlet Knights within one, but Kortney Robinson (Pleasant Grove, Utah/Pleasant Grove) recorded a kill to end the set at 15-13. Robinson notched four kills as the Hoyas hit .214 in the final set.
The Blue & Gray tied the third and fourth sets late but poor offensive numbers hurt the Hoyas. With the fourth set tied at 23, a Rutgers kill and a GU hitting error ended the set at 25-23. The Hoyas were able to tie the third set at 24 on a kill from Brooke Bachesta (Sammamish, Wash./Eastside Catholic) before committing a service error and a hitting error to end the set at 26-24.
"We overcame any offensive struggles with a great defensive effort, averaging just over 15 digs a set," said Williams. "We saw some great hustle plays that made a significant difference. We also served well. Coleman had six aces while serving a tough match."
The second set began with early back-and-forth play. With the set tied at nine, Robinson recorded a kill, Rutgers committed two attacking errors and Paris Coleman (Inglewood, Calif./Brentwood School) connected with two service aces to put GU up 14-9. The Hoyas maintained the lead and took the set 25-19 on a Dorismond kill. Riggins tallied four kills as the Hoyas hit .350 in the second set.
The Hoyas committed two early attacking errors and fell behind 13-7 in the first set. After a Dorismond kill, Coleman served the next six points as GU came within one at 14-13. Malone tied the set at 15 with a kill from Rezin. A Rutgers error gave the Hoyas a one-point lead at 16-15 that the team would not surrender. The first set ended at 25-21 on another kill from Dorismond. Malone notched four kills, 12 assists and three digs in the first set.
The Blue & Gray return to action on Sunday, Oct. 31 at 2 p.m. in McDonough Arena. The Hoyas will face Seton Hall on Halloween. Come dressed in your Halloween best as you cheer on your Hoyas against a BIG EAST opponent.
