WASHINGTON - Georgetown University's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (28-26, 25-23, 25-19) decision to visiting St. John's in BIG EAST action on Friday night. The Hoyas fall to 7-18 overall and 1-12 in league play.
Symone Speech (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) led the Hoyas with 13 kills to go with five digs and three blocks while Alyssa Sinnette (Pearland, Texas/Dawson) added 12 kills and 13 digs for a double-double. Aima Eichie (Castle Rock, Colo./Rock Canyon/UC Davis) chipped in eight kills without committing an attack error and Riley Wertzberger (Dallas, Texas/Richardson) notched seven kills.
Paige McKnight (Atlanta, Ga./Dunwoody) paced the Georgetown offense with a match-high 36 assists.
A back-and-forth opening frame saw 20 ties and nine lead changes. Neither side led by more than three points, a 12-9 Red Storm advantage, the entire stanza and both teams fought off set points before St. John's eventually outlasted their hosts. Georgetown outhit SJU .256 to .231 and recorded 19 kills in the frame, including seven from Sinnette and six from Speech.
The Hoyas took an early 4-1 lead in the second set before St. John's battled back to knot things up at 4-4. Another close stanza ensued, with neither team able to pull away despite another 14 ties and nine lead changes throughout. Georgetown led late, up 22-20, but SJU closed out the set on a 5-1 run to take the frame.
In the third, GU once again outhit the Red Storm but could only manage 11 kills in the set. The Hoyas battled back from an early 7-3 deficit to tie the set at 11-11 and kept pace with SJU at 15-15 before the Red Storm pulled away late to close out the match on a 10-4 spurt.
Julia Cast led St. John's (14-15, 6-8 BIG EAST) with 17 kills.
Georgetown returns to action on Saturday as it hosts Seton Hall at 6 p.m.
