WASHINGTON - The Georgetown volleyball team celebrated its 2013 season with its annual awards banquet at Maggiano's Little Italy Restaurant on Sunday evening.
Sophomore outside hitter Lauren Saar (Richland, Mich./Plainwell) was selected, in a vote by her teammates, as the 2013 Team MVP. Saar finished the season with team-highs in kills (345), kills per set (3.08) and serve-receive passing average (2.19). She was eighth overall in the entire BIG East with her kills per set average. Saar played in all 29 of Georgetown's matches in 2013, finishing in double digits in kills on 20 separate occasions, including reaching 20 kills three times. She also had double digits in digs 22 times, including a season-high 29 digs versus Campbell on Sep. 7.
"Lauren is an integral part of our success, stabilizing our passing pattern and leading our team in kills," Head Coach Arlisa Williams said. "Our MVP is voted on by the players and it is awesome that Lauren's teammates recognize the significant contribution that she provides in our program."
The Hoyas also honored their statistical leaders for the season. Along with Saar in kills per set and serve-receive passing average, junior middle blocker Dani White (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo), who was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team following the season, led Georgetown in both hitting percentage (.272), blocks per set (.98) and points per set (3.50), which was good for eighth in the BIG EAST. Additionally, junior outside hitter Alex Johnson (Tampa, Fla./Plant) led the Hoyas in aces per set (.31), which placed her fifth in the BIG EAST, and junior libero MacKenzie Simpson (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) was tops on the team in digs per set (3.78), good for 10th in the entire conference.
Georgetown finished the 2013 season with a 10-19 overall record and a 4-12 mark in BIG EAST play.
