2002 Georgetown Women’s Volleyball Team Picked to Finish 4th in the BIG EAST

8/1/2002

Providence, R.I. -- The 2002 Georgetown University women's volleyball team is picked to finish fourth in the BIG EAST Conference regular season, as voted by the conference's 14 head coaches.  The Hoyas garnered 135 points to earn the fourth spot.  In addition, rising sophomore middle blocker Sara Albert (Davis, Calif./Davis) was selected to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team.

Notre Dame is picked to win its fourth-consecutive BIG EAST regular season title.  The Irish received 166 points, including 10 first-place votes.  Pittsburgh placed second in the balloting with 151 points and three first-place votes.  Rutgers earned 142 votes to capture third place.  The Scarlet Knights also picked up one first-place vote.

Albert enjoyed an outstanding freshman season on the Hilltop, earning the 2001 BIG EAST Rookie of the Year Award for her outstanding play.  She led Georgetown in blocks (117 total) and hitting percentage (.385) last season.  Albert also led the BIG EAST in hitting percentage in both overall matches and in conference play (.408) and picked up the conference’s Rookie of the Week award twice during the year.  Her hitting percentage ranked her 10th in the nation at one point during the season, one of only two freshmen to break the top 30.

The Hoyas posted an 18-9 overall record in 2001 and a 10-2 mark in BIG EAST play under third-year head coach Li Liu.  Georgetown finished second at the 2001 BIG EAST Tournament, defeating second seed Rutgers before falling to top seed Notre Dame in the Championship match.
