WASHINGTON - Georgetown University volleyball standout Symone Speech (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) was selected to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, as announced by the league office on Tuesday. Speech led the Hoyas to a 3-0 weekend to win the Service Academy Challenge.
Speech averaged 3.33 kills and 1.89 blocks per set over the weekend while hitting at an impressive .491 clip. She opened the Service Academy Challenge with 10 kills and three blocks in a 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-18) sweep over The Citadel on Friday before posting 12 kills and four blocks in a 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-17) victory over Columbia and eight kills and 10 blocks in a 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-17) win over Army West Point on Saturday. With 30 total kills on 57 swings, she committed just two hitting errors the entire weekend.
On the season, Speech is averaging 3.91 kills and 1.00 blocks per set. She leads the BIG EAST, and ranks fifth nationally, in hitting percentage with a blistering .519 output.
Georgetown has gone 5-1 to open the season, its best start since the 2012 campaign. The Hoyas return to action as they host the annual Georgetown Classic in the friendly confines of McDonough Arena this weekend, welcoming James Madison, Coppin State and Buffalo to the Hilltop.
