Georgetown Women's Volleyball Team Prepares for Stanford Invitational

WASHINGTON, DC - Hoping to build on last weekend's success at the Georgetown Classic, the Georgetown University women's volleyball team (5-4) is preparing for the Stanford Invitational, held Thursday-Saturday, September 14-16, at Palo Alto, Calif. The Hoyas will take on host Stanford (6-1) as well as Santa Clara (6-1) and UC-Irvine (2-6). Stanford is currently ranked seventh in the latest AVCA poll released Monday, September 11, while Santa Clara is eighth.
Georgetown enters the three-day tournament after a 3-0 weekend from the Georgetown Classic Tournament. The Hoyas defeated Campbell (3-0), Howard (3-0) and Coastal Carolina (3-1) en route to the tournament crown. Jessica Buffum (San Jose, Calif./Lynbrook) was selected Most Valuable Player of the Georgetown Classic, while teammates Annie Connor (Sr., Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis) and Katherine Niesen (Gainesville, Fla./Eastside) were named to the All-Tournament Team.
In recognition for her outstanding play, Buffum was named BIG EAST Player of the Week for the week ending September 10. It was the first such honor for the sophomore outside hitter and the first time a GU player has earned the award since the 2004 season.
The Hoyas schedule for the Stanford Invitational is as follows: Thursday, September 14 vs. UC-Irvine at 7:30 EST; Saturday, September 15 vs. Stanford at 10:00 p.m.; and Sunday, September 16 vs. Santa Clara at 10:00 p.m.
