WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University volleyball team (6-7) opens BIG EAST play this weekend with two conference road matches. They will play St. John's (13-3) in Queens, N.Y. Friday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m., and then meet Connecticut (8-6) in Storrs, Conn. Sunday, Sept. 23 at 2 p.m.
In the home opener Tuesday at McDonough Arena, GU lost to Liberty 1-3. The Hoyas have lost their last six matches.
Haley Lowrance (Phoenix, Ariz.) improved upon her BIG EAST-leading 11.60 assists per set, tallying 52 in the four-setter. Dani White (Mission Viejo, Calif.) was involved in five blocks and led the team with 18 kills. Annalee Abell(Lexington, Ky.) added 13 kills.
The Red Storm beat Iona 3-0 at home Tuesday night, for their third win in a row. They return several players from the team that Georgetown defeated 3-1 last season at McDonough Arena.
St. John's has several foreign-born players, and Georgetown head coach Arlisa Williamsexpects them to bring a different brand of volleyball than the Hoyas are used to seeing. Aleksandra Wachowicz paces the Red Storm in kills, while seniors Gabriela Petkova and Sabina Piegza lead in digs and assists.
The Huskies took down Sacred Heart in Fairfield, Conn. Wednesday night. Devon Maugle and Mattison Quayle are tied for the team lead in kills. Senior Kelsey Maving currently leads the BIG EAST with 288 digs.
Georgetown has won the last two meetings with Connecticut. It took all five sets last year at McDonough Arena, where the Blue & Gray got the 3-2 win.
The Hoyas finished 6-8 in conference play last season. They will be the Red Storm's first BIG EAST conference opponent this season, while the Huskies host Villanova Friday before GU comes to town.
Georgetown returns to McDonough Arena following this weekend's matches. They host Villanova Friday, Sept. 28 and Rutgers Sunday, Sept. 30.
