Georgetown Volleyball Falls 3-0 to Notre Dame
October 12, 2002 Washington, DC – The Georgetown University women’s volleyball team fell 3-0 (30-26, 31-29, 30-21) to BIG EAST Conference leader Notre Dame on Saturday, October 12, in McDonough Gym. The loss drops the Hoyas to 12-8 overall and 3-2 in conference play, while Notre Dame remains unbeaten in league competition and improves to 14-3 overall.
Senior outside hitter Lauren Warner (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei) once again led Georgetown in hitting. Warner tallied 11 kills as well as four digs and three block assists. Junior middle blocker Katie Neff and freshman middle blocker Lauren Kelbley led the Fighting Irish with 13 kills apiece. Neff also posted the match’s highest hitting percentage with .611.
Sophomore middle blocker Sara Albert (Davis, Calif./Davis) continues to provide the backbone of Georgetown’s defensive efforts. Albert turned in a match-high six blocks on the afternoon in addition to four kills. Junior setter Jen Ward (Huntington Beach, Calif./Mater Dei) recorded a team-high 27 assists to go with four digs and two blocks, while sophomore outside hitter Julie Grauert (Lake Oswego, Ore. Jesuit) registered a match-high 10 digs.
Starting sophomore outside hitters Rachel Nelson (Sacramento, Calif./St. Francis) and Natasha Nguyen (El Segundo, Calif./El Segundo) finished the match with eight and seven kills, respectively. Nelson also had a match-high three service aces. Freshman outside hitter Ashley Lancaster (Huntsville, Ala./Huntsville) provided three kills, three digs and a block to the GU effort.
Notre Dame hit .270 for the match, including a .429 for the third game, while holding Georgetown to just .078.
The Hoyas host BIG EAST opponent Syracuse on Sunday, October 13, at 1:00 p.m. in McDonough Gym.
