Volleyball Set To Host Three Matches, Senior Day This Weekend

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown volleyball team (10-13, 4-6 BIG EAST) will look to make a big push for the postseason this weekend as it hosts three conference matches at McDonough Arena. The final home weekend of the season starts Friday afternoon as the Hoyas host Xavier in a 4 p.m. match. Contests with Creighton on Saturday at 7 p.m. and Butler on Sunday at 4 p.m. close out Georgetown’s home schedule for 2013.

The Blue and Gray will celebrate its three seniors – Annalee Abell (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay), Brooke Bachesta (Sammamish, Wash./Eastside Catholic) and Whitney Jencks (Arlington, S.D./Arlington) with a Senior Day ceremony prior to the Creighton match.

Last weekend, Georgetown won the first two sets and hung on for a hard-fought 3-2 (25-19, 25-23, 15-25, 12-15, 16-14) win over Villanova in a BIG EAST match Saturday night at McDonough Arena. The Hoyas were led by four players who finished in double figures in kills and five had at least 10 digs. Lauren Saar (Richland, Mich./Plainwell) was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll after registering her 15th double-double of 2013, pounding a season-high 21 kills and digging 13 balls. Alex Johnson (Tampa, Fla./Plant) also put in a double-double performance, her 10th of the season, finishing with 10 kills and 15 digs. Dani White (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) finished with 13 kills and four blocks, three of which were of the solo variety. Ashlie Williams (Los Angeles, Calif./Marymount) contributed 11 kills and a team-high .381 hitting percentage. Emily Gisolfi (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) shattered her previous career-high, tying for Saturday’s match-high honors with 22 digs.

Saar continues to lead Georgetown’s attack with a 3.30 kills per set average, ranking her eighth in the BIG EAST. White and  Johnson are also putting up big offensive numbers, averaging 2.74 and 2.48 kills per set, respectively. White also has a team-high 97 total blocks. Caitlin Brauneis (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) averages 9.86 assists per set and is also third on the Hoyas in total blocks (38). Mackenzie Simpson (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) is tops on the team with 324 digs, with an average of 3.56 digs per set. 

Xavier enters Friday’s match with a 16-9 overall record and a 7-3 record in the BIG EAST, tying the Musketeers for second in the conference standings with Creighton. Xavier had a four match winning streak stopped on Saturday in a 3-1 loss to league-leading Marquette. The Musketeers are led offensively by Abbey Bessler, who is fourth in the BIG EAST with 3.72 kills per set. Alex Smith, who also averages 2.63 kills per set, leads the conference with a .397 hitting percentage. Aubree Smith averages 10.75 assists per set while Sarah Brown leads Xavier defensively with 4.02 digs per set. Alex Blair is third in the conference with 122 total blocks on the season.

Creighton enters the weekend tied with Xavier for second in the BIG EAST with a 7-3 conference record and a 16-6 overall record. The Blue Jays play at Villanova on Friday night prior to Saturday night’s matchup at McDonough. Leah McNary leads Creighton’s offensive attack with 3.11 kills per set while Michelle Sicner averages 10.27 assists per set. Defensively, Kate Elman leads the Blue Jays with 3.77 digs per set and Kelli Browning leads the entire BIG EAST with 125 total blocks, an average of 1.49 per set.

Butler comes into the weekend with a 19-6 overall record and 6-4 mark in the conference. The Bulldogs are fighting for the fourth and final playoff spot for the BIG EAST Championships later this month. They will play at Villanova on Saturday before Sunday’s matchup. Belle Obert leads Butler with 3.34 kills per set and also averages 2.04 digs and 1.10 blocks per set. Brooke Ruffolo leads the Bulldogs’ defense with 4.75 digs per set while Mary Striedl contributes 2.70.

The Hoyas wrap up the regular season with three straight matches on the road starting with a match at Butler on Friday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. The road trip will also feature contests at Xavier (Saturday, Nov. 16) and Creighton (Friday, Nov. 22).
