Temple Sweeps Georgetown in Volleyball Action
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (Nov. 8, 2000) -- The Temple University Owls swept the Georgetown University Hoyas 3-0 (10-15, 6-15, 5-15) in women's volleyball action on Wednesday, November 8, at McGonigle Hall in Philadelphia, Pa. The non-conference loss drops the Hoyas to 15-13 overall, while GU remains 5-5 in BIG EAST play. Temple, who has won 14 of their last 16 matches, improves to 17-8 overall.
Sophomore outside hitter Lauren Warner (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei) led Georgetown with 11 kills, five digs and a block on the night. Hoya freshman setter Jennifer Ward (Huntington Beach, Calif./Mater Dei) posted a team-high 22 assists to go with five digs, a block and an ace. Junior outside hitter Yulia Vtyurina (Moscow, Russia/Moscow #1415) contributed a team-high 11 digs in addition to seven kills, two blocks and an ace. Freshman Laura Hart (Sacramento, Calif./Rio Americano) turned in four kills, five digs, three blocks and an ace, while sophomore middle blocker Anna Kleinsorge (Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis) and senior middle blocker Meg Troller (Elmhurst, Ill./York) both recorded three kills in the match. Kleinsorge also registered three blocks and Troller two. Senior middle blocker Kaili Stevens (Lenexa, Kan./Shawnee Mission) added two kills, three digs, three assists and two blocks to the GU effort. Senior outside hitter Kiran Gill (Naperville, Ill./Naperville) ended the match with six digs and two assists, with junior outside hitter Meg Mullen (Westlake Village, Calif./Westlake) posting four digs and a kill.
Senior Atlantic 10 Player of the Year, Alma Kovaci led Temple with 17 kills and 15 digs. Also posting double figure kill numbers was freshman Margaret Majewska (10 kills, five digs), the current Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week. Setting things up for the Owls was senior setter Teresa Schumacher, who dished out 30 assists for the home team.
Temple hit .243 for the match, while holding Georgetown to .113. The Hoyas held a 9-8 edge in team blocks
Georgetown wraps up the season on Saturday, November 11, with a 4:00 p.m. meeting with BIG EAST foe Villanova in McDonough Gym.
