Volleyball Travels To Butler, Xavier To Commence Season-Ending Road Trip

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown volleyball team (10-16, 4-9 BIG EAST) kicks off its season-ending road trip this weekend with a pair of conference matches at Butler and Xavier. The Hoyas will take on the Bulldogs in Indianapolis on Friday night at 7 p.m. before traveling to Cincinnati on Saturday to play the Musketeers at 4 p.m.
Last weekend, Georgetown dropped three home conference matches at McDonough Arena. Playing three of the top teams in the BIG EAST, the Hoyas lost contests with Xavier (3-2), Creighton (3-1) and Butler (3-0). Prior to Saturday’s match, the Hoyas celebrated its three seniors – Annalee Abell (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay), Brooke Bachesta (Sammamish, Wash./Eastside Catholic) and Whitney Jencks (Arlington, S.D./Arlington) – in a Senior Day ceremony. Freshman Ashlie Williams (Los Angeles, Calif./Marymount) set a career high on Friday with 17 kills and totaled 34 kills on the weekend with an impressive .329 hitting percentage. MacKenzie Simpson (Greensboro, N.C./North Guilford) averaged 4.58 digs per set over the three matches and registered a 2.3 passer rating.
Butler comes into Friday’s matchup with a 21-6 overall record and an 8-4 mark in the conference. The Bulldogs have clinched the fourth and final playoff spot in the BIG EAST Championships and are fighting to improve their seeding. Belle Obert leads Butler with 3.33 kills per set and also averages 2.07 digs and 1.11 blocks per set. Brooke Ruffolo leads the Bulldogs’ defense with 4.81 digs per set, ranking her third in the conference, while Mary Striedl contributes 2.71 and Morgan Peterson contributes 2.32.
Xavier enters the weekend with an 18-9 overall record and a 9-3 record in the BIG EAST, and is currently tied with Creighton for the second seed in the BIG EAST Championships later this month. The Musketeers have won six of their past seven matches. Abbey Bessler leads Xavier, and is fourth in the BIG EAST with 3.75 kills per set. Alex Smith, who also averages 2.64 kills per set, leads the conference with a .408 hitting percentage. Aubree Smith averages 10.76 assists per set while Sarah Brown leads Xavier defensively with 3.99 digs per set. Alex Blair is third in the conference with 134 total blocks on the season.
The Hoyas wrap up the regular season with a match at Creighton on Friday, Nov. 22 at 7 p.m.
