Changes in Georgetown Athletic Department

Washington, D.C. -- Georgetown Athletic Director Bernard Muir today announced that beginning March 1, F Clarke Holmes, MD will join the Athletic Department staff as Director of Sports Medicine. Doctor Holmes comes to Georgetown from the University of Mississippi Medical Center, where he served as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and Rehabilitation, and was a Physician Member of the University Orthopedic Associates. In addition to his scholarly publications, Dr. Holmes has been honored as "Teacher of the Year" by the University of South Florida College of Medicine.

"We're very pleased to make an addition of this caliber to the Athletic Department," Athletic Director Bernard Muir said. "Dr. Holmes joining the Sports Medicine Department is another example of our commitment to not only creating the best experience for our student-athletes but of our dedication to improving and expanding our resources to allow our teams to compete successfully. I'm very excited that we can improve what was already an outstanding part of the Athletic department."

Charles "Doug" Huffman has been named Associate Head Trainer as part of the changes in the Office of Sports Medicine. "Doug" has been a major component of the Sports Medicine staff since September of 1974. In his 31 years at the University, Doug has worked with every sport in the athletic department. The transition to Associate Head Trainer will reduce his administrative responsibilities and allow Huffman more direct contact with the student athletes.

In other news, Director Muir announced that Li Liu, Women's Volleyball Head Coach, has resigned. Li Liu coached the Georgetown Women's Volleyball program for seven years, amassing an overall record of 110-103 and a BIG EAST mark of 41-42. This season the team went 6-22 and was 2-12 in BIG EAST play.

"We appreciate Coach Li Liu's efforts in mentoring the program, and look to build on this foundation," Athletic Director Muir said. "We will open the position for a national search effective immediately."

Assistant Coach Mitch Sadowsky will continue with the program while a national search for a new head coach is conducted.
